PSC alphamix vs SD 744 mixer??
« on: March 07, 2009, 06:09:31 AM »
Hi everybody,

I'm looking for new portable mixer and decided to look over the 4-ch PSC and 4-ch Sound Devise 744.
The first one seems to have a lot usefull functions and the second one which costs another $1000 seems to have more quality constructon.
I want it for documentary and film recording purposes.
Any idea?

744 you need an external preamp for channel 3 and 4. You cannot run 4 mics without an additional external 2 channel preamp.
Mics: DPA3552 kit/DPA3521 kit/DPA SMK4081 kit/DPA SMK4060 kit/Schoeps 2X MK21, 2X MK22 and 2X MK4v and 2X Schoeps CCM2S
Mixers/preamps: Sonosax SX-M32/Sonosax SX-M2 LS/Grace Design V3/DPA MMA6000/Millennia HV-32P
Recorders: SD722/PCM-D50/MT2
Playback: Grace m903 - Sennheiser HD650 / Bowers & Wilkins Nautilus 805s

You seem to be comparing two different animals: the PSC is a mixer and the 744 is a recorder.  Maybe you mean the PSC vs SD 442?  Both of those are mixers.  Here is a comparison on a different site: http://dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=86455

BTW, one CAN run four mics into a 744 without an additional mic pre.  The 744 will give you 18dB of gain on its Line input, and coupled with some high output mics (probably condensers) and recording 24 bits (why wouldn't you?) you'll have enough signal for most situations.

Oh sh*$, i made a mistake  :o :(

I meant SD 442 portable mixer.
Thank you for the usefull link. I realised that PSC got good preamp, low noise inputs, add to the rest features...

Thank you

There is no comparison between the two mixers. The Sound Devices 442 wins hands down.

I have used both mixers extensively, and the Sound Devices is better in every category. It sounds better, the meters are better, it is much more durable, and Sound Devices customer service cannot be beat. Trust me, don't waste your time with the PSC, it may be cheaper, but in this case you certainly get what you pay for.

I'm a very happy Sound Devices 442 owner!
Mics: Schoeps MK4 & MK41, AKG CK63 (Naiant Actives)

Preamps: Naiant KCY Littlebox

Recorders: Sound Devices 664, Sony PCM-M10
