Title: Little Box
Post by: DiggerinVA on April 04, 2011, 02:52:30 PM
I have a question on the signal light (I think I figured out the other one completely(well probably not, but I have a good guess). while running the little box late in the second set the light came on full time green with no change on the output signal. The recording sounds fine so far as I can tell. Just wondering what happened. At some point I believe it will change colors when clipping.  Thank You!

My first thought. But the batteries Dual 9 volt showed well into the good on my battery meter (actually about half of what a new battery shows). That would be a easy thing to understand since room for error is probably built in.

Thank You Jon. That explanation makes perfect sense. By the way I really like the sound of the unit, Thank You for your work.

More like blue/purple, green/red, orange/red, etc, etc, etc :(

The red comes on much brighter than the green.  I can do separate green and red LEDs on request as well.

Jon, are you talking about the level meter in the middle? I can kinda see a diff between the green/red :) As long as I'm not overloading my 722/M10, I dont care what color they are :P ;D

Just got my Littlebox in mail ... right in time for Wanee. But mine did not come with RCA outs. Rather it's got the minijack (two of them). I'm in a bind ... what will I need to connect to a R-09?

1/8m > 1/8m
any store will sell it in a pinch - walmart, radio shack

I guess you hadn't ordered it with 1/8" (x2) outs?  Do you know if they are both mono outs?  Then all you need is a mono (x2) > stereo (x1) adapter cable to plug into your R-09.

good point
i assumed one was an out an one was plug in power or something else
if it is 2 outs you need a dual 1/8m > stereo 1/8m
which walmart will not sell but radio shack should

Radio Shack even has a one-footer available... it works great with my LS-10 and the 1/4"-20 stud that I had added to my Littlebox. I had managed to lose the longer cable that Olympus provided, but I found I like the shorter cable better.

I thought I was getting RCA outs.

I've been thinking about a LB, but wondered whether to get RCA or 1/8" out. Even with a recorder that has 1/8" in, RCA outs seem sturdier even if you have to buy a specific cable, and there is little chance of the cables rotating with either straight or RA connectors. Straight 1/8" plugs put stress on the deck, and RA needs to be taped in place to avoid static from rotation. Curious if any users have a different opinion from past experience.

Mine's just got RCA outs
see my rig pic thread:http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=143728.0 (http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=143728.0)

you'll notice in my custom cable I used the Switchcraft Right Angle RCA's and they are solid and do NOT rotate, -- I only worry out the 1/8 TRS  mini plug on the M-10 end...
so far I totally love it!

I also have a rt-angle RCA[Switchcraft]>rt-angle 1/8"[Switchcraft] that I run from my LB>M10, and they are both rock solid on both ends!

Would there be any significant advantages, unless you have an LB with non-standard mic powering?
The 661 supplies P48, and mic gain should be quiet enough. Or is LB gain even less noisy?
Title: Re: Little Box
Post by: jibooer on April 25, 2011, 02:42:35 PM
My reasoning for using an external pre for the PMD-661 is because I want a different 'flavour' (and the input/output transformer options)  than what my stock unit can provide. Many TS'ers have used different pres in front of their units, so I figured why can't I use a LBox/bigBox? I almost always do shows which are open taping, so although I like the flexiblity of it being a standalone unit, I don't mind the extra piece of gear in the bag.

Now I just have to convince the better-half that I need one ::)! But I digress....

As far as your question goes, I haven't seen any comparisons to determine which mic gain is quieter. But in my experience the PMD-661's, especially the modded ones, can handle most recording situations requiring P48.

IMHO, my LB is just as quiet as my 722 Phantom ;)
Title: Re: Little Box
Post by: DiggerinVA on April 25, 2011, 08:31:26 PM
The 660 I have does the power for my mics. I noticed the how warm the deck is in the connection area while running the combination. So I went to look at my other powering options. I also do remember the Stewart supplies sounding better than the internal 9 volt. In the end I now have the 2 channel Big Box with XLR line out and a mini out dual 9-volt sleds and I am very happy with the sound. It is a great improvement over the 660's pre and phantom stages (sonically) and I don't have the power supply issues (that unit ate AA's; though that was fixed with the tekenon). The 661 has a better meter and A/D from what I can see. So I am still thinking.

I think you can benefit greatly be upgrading to the 661, if your still thinking about it. You can do 24 bit, the tekkeon can power it for 15+ hours, it has a s/pdif in and the XLR line-in has a pro line level of +4, so that should give lots of headroom.

Good to hear the bigbox works for you.

BTW, sent my specs (LB in a biggerbox case (2 XLR ins, 2 XLR outs)) into Jon, waiting for a response...

I'm quite happy with my LB > LS-10 setup - happy enough that any upgrades are going to involve microphones rather than the recorder or preamp. I wish I could afford that pair of 4011s in the Yard Sale... My budget says otherwise, though.

I got both of them. Why not get everything you would ever need in a LB. They are all custom anyway.

Have 1/8 out on front and RCA on back. USe 1/8 for Edirolro9 and RCA's to Tascam DR-680 with a RCA to XLR adapter.

Now bought a Big box for XLR outs and also had jon put in the 1/8 out for edirol for second recording (redundancy)

Don't think jon can fit a xlr in and out in a LB but can in a big box. I have the BB with xlr in and out and input and output transformers. Those seem to keep the bass more under control.

I can confirm the above. I have started the process of building a littlebox v1.5 with 2 xlr in and 2 xlr out. It needs the BB case which is an extra $35.

When I ordered mine I just e-mailed Jon (his e-mail is on his website somewhere) and spelled out exactly what I wanted.  He then gave me a price.  Like you I was confused with the website ordering process so I found this to be the easiest way to make sure I was getting exactly what I wanted.

Hey Chris, the littlebox or biggerbox are great!

His email is music@naiant.com

When I ordered mine, I mailed a money order in so he totalled everything up and I just got a money order for that amount. Not sure how it would work if you've already placed the order but I'm sure Jon can figure something out.
