How to convert PAL to NTSC?
« on: July 12, 2006, 07:46:23 PM »
Hey Guys,

Recently I downloaded a Metallica concert (Rock Am Ring 2006), the files are vob's but it's in PAL format.  Is there any freeware out there that can convert this to NTSC so I can play it back on my dvd player?  Thanks for any help!

This does not work on all DVD players but it does work on many. It is very easy to use - only takes a minute. I hope it works for you.

here's my 2 cents on the PAL thing.  if you trade and or download live shows on DVD you need to get a player that will play PAL.  otherwise I would have missed some gems.  the "trick" posted above may work but converting PAL > NTSC is more than most of us know how to do without it being a shitty product.  both my cheap ass players play PAL.  one is a $35 (walmart or target) cyberhome ( now trutech).  the other a $55 philips from walmart.  it also plays xvid etc.

again just my 2 cents

Yeah, don't mess with the original source, if possible.

I'll check out the link.

As for the dvd player...it's from Sony   ::)

Hmm...I have a Samsung in the bedroom, I should check that out and see if it reads PAL discs.  I'm not about to throw down any cash on another dvd player right now.  Thanks for the comments guys!

If the audio is unencrypted pcm Lplex will extract it to wav or flac, and then re-author it, if you like, as an "audio-only" ntsc dvd. see

Have you tried to play back PAL video on your DVD player yet?  You might burn a disc and see if it works.  A lot of times the ability to do so is not listed in the specs.  My old Sony played PAL discs.  So does my old Philips, and it's about 8 years old by now.

In the long run, converting the video is a hassle and noticeably reduces the video quality.  The "trick" may or may not work either - it's hit and miss.

Best suggestion is as above - grab a new player if yours doesn't play the video.  99% of them play PAL video with no problem.

Yeah, it's a newer Sony 5 disc carousel dvd/sacd player and it refused to playback the disc.

it'll most likely take awhile, but you can convert to NTSC with no noticeable degradation in picture quality

Its more or less a frame rate conversion.

The audio will not suffer any loss.

I'd also add...that if you do convert it to NTSC, keep the original PAL source on burned disc as well so you have that version for trade.  Keep the converted NTSC for your own personal viewing...
