Have you tried to play back PAL video on your DVD player yet? You might burn a disc and see if it works. A lot of times the ability to do so is not listed in the specs. My old Sony played PAL discs. So does my old Philips, and it's about 8 years old by now.
In the long run, converting the video is a hassle and noticeably reduces the video quality. The "trick" may or may not work either - it's hit and miss.
Best suggestion is as above - grab a new player if yours doesn't play the video. 99% of them play PAL video with no problem.
