M-Audio Microtracker power sources
« on: August 15, 2005, 10:34:08 PM »
ok, so we know it has an internal rechargeable that, according to M-Audio, lasts @8 hours(3 w/ phantom on).
it also has a USB power jack.

what we dont know is its current draw...(at least, not that I can find) other than 5V.
it will obviously pull more power when using phantom and a microdrive (compared to CF).

when it comes to external powering, there is:
$?? LeeGeddys VR Box w/ USB jack.
$?? Walmart 9v ?(needs to step down to 5V)?
$150 Sockets Mobile Power Pack (rechargeable) -  http://www.socketstore.com/searchresults.asp?search_id=13
$10 4xAA USB Power Pack - https://compactimpact.com/shopping/product_info.php?cPath=35&products_id=63

what other options are there??

I thought to chop the cig-plug of my power invertor and addng a 4 pin XLR to use with my 12v SLA:

12v SLA>powerinvertor>MTracker Wallwart>MTracker.

The power cable is actually a USB to miniUSB cable.  The USB end goes into the plug block.  The Ipod's have a similar plug block > USB/Firewire connector.  So it makes cutting the cable in half and reaffixing a no go.

I found these so far
http://www.dealtime.com/xPF-Belkin_HP_JORNADA_SYNC_CHARGER_W_USB_CIG_LIGHTER_ADPT_F_JORNADA
this is for me really because I use a cig adapter as part of my power cord assembly
but I also found these
this is a bit pricey and I am not sure if the USB 5v is enough to power the tracker it only puts out 700 mah at the usb 5v http://www.zapworld.com/PE/ZAPD14.asp
this might work for existing power setups I don't really see a USB port for it but it claims to support about every power device out there

and here is a link to hack your own USB cable for your power needs.

My suggestion is to use a car power invertor (12DC>120AC) and plugging the wallwart into it.  I'm not saying cut the USB.  I think you misunderstand.

This looks promising:  http://www.hackaday.com/entry/1234000270029372/

i *should* be able to make a 5v mini-usb power supply for the recorder. i doubt that mtrack will draw huge amounts of current so it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

or couldnt you just modify the vrbox to send 5v thru the mini-usb, like you did for someone else on the sytandard usb ???

that would be great, just swap the 5v jb3 out for a 5v usb out, or just add another out altogether for the 5v mini-usb

yes. that's the beauty of using 4pin xlrs and not hardwiring.
