where to mount mics when stealth taping?
« on: January 08, 2006, 01:25:15 PM »
hi guys!!!
i will tape a heavy metal show next week :)
the equipment will be a sony mz-r70 and the core sound low cost binaurals with low sensivity option.
the problem is not of getting the gear in, crotch-method is quite dependable.
BUT, where should i mount the mics? under my shirt at my shoulder? it is dark in there and because of the small size of the room there will be not that much security.

any better ideas? :D

Put the mics as high as you dare. The higher up, the better. If you wear glasses, you could clip the mics to the arms (this is what I do, and I'm generally pleased with the results). If you wear a cap/hat, you can mount the mics in the cap/hat. Have a look in the 'rig pictures' forum, there are plenty of pictures to give you ideas :)

Nothing wrong with shirt-mounted, but definately the higher up the better.

+t and good luck!

Where a beanie or a baseball cap and clip them to that.  If it really needs to be super-stealth, mount them inside of the top of the hat with some elastic and run the cables down your shirt.

Don't bob your head and don't move around too much  :P

If you've got hair that will conceal them, put `em on your ears.  Your tapes will thank you.

btw, my hairs isn't long at all and this method has worked for me every time.  The baffle(in this case, your head) is key.

Your ears, on the other hand, may not thank you, particularly if you use serrated croc clips! ;D

Seriously though - I get good results collar mounting the mics, and I'm not that tall. Avoids the stiff neck you get mounting them higher up.

The clips are useless, imo.  I never used them and probably never will.  I simply 'form-fitted' a piece of sturdy wire to the back of my head and it 'hooks' over my ears. Black wire helps or you can spray paint it or cover it in tape...whatever.   It looks similar to those DPA headmounts except much smaller.  I, then, attach the mics to the mount with a small amt of electrical tape on top of my ears and wind the cables in a spiral around the mount to the back of my neck...centered...and feed them down into my shirt.

That's what I was told but I went ahead and ordered them with my CMC-8s anyway.  Glad I did.  I hadn't gotten a chance to make a hat or croakie mount for the mics and a show came up, so I just clipped them onto my beanie.  If I hadn't had the clips, I would have had to... I dunno.. gaff tape them to my skull I suppose.

My preference is shoulder mount {but I'm tall already} that way you don't feel trapped not being able to move your head around.  Another option I have had success with {and with those C-S mics with their stock clips even} is clipping onto something up high so you are getting over all the heads but pointed at the PA.  My method has been a backpack with the gear and I pull the mics up and clip them up and just let it roll.  Other benefits are being able to get drinks and move around during the show.

ok, thanx for your fast replies. i am not that tall, but will stand in the first row quite close to the PA. so it will be possible to get good results while mounting the mics not that high.
if you are interested in th results i will post samples afterwards if you want to.

ok, one possible real newbie question...*ashame*...what means "+T"?

It's like a karma system this board uses.  "T" stands for "Ticket".  Users have tickers under their username and, supposedly, the more tickets you have, the better poster you are.  Don't rely solely on how many tickets a person has, it really doesn't mean anything.

I think once your status is upgraded to "Taperssection Member" you can give and take away tickets.  Probably once you have 50 posts or something.
