Alot of people use the PSP-2/AD-20 combo around here.  The PSP-2 will provide P48 and the AD-20 is your gain/adc.

a modified Lunatec v3 from grace designs  >:D
Seriously, the band makes the music. Tapers just point mics in the right direction and hit "record".

That's good to hear!  The last patcher I had complained about my AKGs, fluffed schoeps for about 15 minutes, stayed patched in, and farted on me all night long.

Um, in my room, one seam is a little off and I stare at it constantly. It's, like, destroying me.

What kind of mics are you running? I used the combo patrick suggested for 6 months or so when I first started taping.

Don't worry about people laughing. Fuck them if they do. just have fun with it. T+

I was told a long time ago to go with the ps-2. It creates less noise & you'll be glad you kicked down the extra cash for it.

I have the Sound Pro preamp up for sale in the yard sale.  Probably the cheapest acceptable solution, at least if you're in the camp that finds the NJB's built in ADC acceptable, which I firmly am.    I was quite pleased with it but have since upgraded to the MixPre 2 (a.k.a. FP24), which I can also highly recommend if you want to spend more.

Sound Pro preamp eh......great, yet another option.....my poor head :)  I will take a look man, thanks!

Sooooo.......whats the general thought on the jb3's adc.....acceptable for a beginner at least?  I plan to mainly record at outdoor festivals

use a phantom power supply, without a doubt.

you can get a ps2/ad20 combo for ~$300, but if I were you I would wait until an oade modded unit comes up in the YS.  the UA5 is very easy to use - only one box and one battery - much more beginner friendly than the ps2/ad20 combo.

you will do just fine with the ps2/ad20 combo; but based on my experience I'd go with any ua-5 you can find.

really depends on your ears - more people say they don't like it than do - but it doesn't matter what they say it's what you hear- you will likely find it acceptable at first but using a differnt A/D will sound MUCH better, if you can be patient i'd say keep checking eBay for a ua-5 and keep checking the yard sale here for either ua-5/ps-2 combo, especially if you can afford it - don't sell yourself short just cause you want something now unless you absolutely have to have a pre right away -  maybe try posting an ISO in the yardsalesomeone may be getting ready to sell one, either one comes up fairly frequently here you shouldn't have to wait too long

You can easily decide this for yourself.  Just record a CD (or LP or FM, whatever) from your stereo to your jukebox (line in, 44 or 48 wav) and you'll hear how the ADC sounds.  Ideally, you'd then do a digital transfer and play it back over your stereo to isolate the effect of the NJB's D-A conversion, but even if you just play it back through the NJBs line out (not headphone out, which degrades the sound a bit) you'll get a decent idea.
