Setting of Church Audio pre and R-09?
« on: June 17, 2007, 12:27:02 PM »
Does anybody have any suggestions about the setting of Church Auidio pre or R-09?  ???

I recorded electric rock show with Church Audio STC-9000 (STC-11 and ST-9000) and R-09. The Gain Range of ST-9000 was set to 30dB and the volume control of the audio level was about 2/3. Output of ST-9000 was connected to line-in of R-09. R-09's settings were 44.1kHz, 24bit and input volume was 8.

The wave form of the recording is shown in the attached picture. It looks like it has a volume limitation at 4dB. What made the limitation of this recording?

How can I avoid this limitation? Should I reduce the volume of the pre or switch to 10dB? Should I reduce the audio level to 1/2? Are there any other suggestions?

Thanks for advance.

I use that preamp with my R-09 as well.  I always set it at +10 dB, and usually have the recorder at levels between 18 and 26.  No problems so far.

Thank you for the advice. I'll try your setting next time.

How do you modify the volume control? There may be two ways to adjust the volume level.

1: Input volume of R-09 is fixed and modify the volume control of the preamp.

2: The volume control of the preamp is fixed and modify the input volume of R-09.

Which do you recommend?

Run the output of my preamp at full level. If you get into a situation where you need to reduce the level quickly you can use my output level control on my preamp. In loud situations I would not use the +30 db setting that's mostly for acoustic stuff the +10 setting will work great for most concerts.

OK. I'll set the preamp to +10dB and full level next time.

Thank you for the advices.

Thank you for all valuable suggestions :).

I recorded an electric rock band with moderate sound pressure at open-air show.

R-09: 24bit 44.1kHz, Line-in, volume 18. AGC off.
CA preamp: 10dB and full volume.

Here is the wave form of the recording. Recording peeks are around -12dB.

As I recorded the event from the begining, the file size reached to 2G during the this band and R-09 created a new file. A vertical line indicates the combination point and the sound is continuous without gap :).

A timely thread!  I just heading out with my CA cards, 9100 preamp, and R-09 for the first time.
I've run this a couple of times now in addition to my main rig just to see how it works.  I've been setting my 9100 at full gain, and the R09 (line in) at level 8 to 12 falls into the -6db range on a typical show (Ratdog, Radiators, not heavy metal).  Seems appropriate.  Now I figure I'm ready for a "low profile" event. >:D

Thanks for your input everyone.

I just received my Church mics and pre today and am setting out to record VFest tomorrow.

I was wondering what to do with the preamp vol and the gain...but I'm going with "full" and +10b with the Edirol at 15. Fortunately I'll have some downtime between sets to listen in.

So far, I've been running SP-CMC-4's, into CA ST9100 at full gain, line in, R-09 set to input level of 8/30.  I've had great success with thi so far, but plan on taping Rush, indoors. Will the above settings be ok, or should I back off the preamp a little?
Note: I have the switchable 4.7K option, so with that engaged, I am getting approx. 14DB of gain with the knob set to maximum.
