Sorry about this stupid question but is this the cable we should use to connect the SD 722 to the computer?

The fat connector is for the 722 and the small connector is for the computer. What if the computer does not have an i-link S400 in-put jack (some desktop uses only the common flat USB connectors). Curious what cables people use if their desk top don't have the i-link S400 jack.

No. You need a Firewire at one end and USB at the other. This is USB and mini USB. The 722 one will cost you more, no doubt. But you will have the joy of attaching it to your 722. What happened to the one that came with it???? 8)
It needsd a large USB at the one end and Firewire at the other. At least, that is how mine is.

Thanks do you have a link where to purchase one? Don't want to get the wrong cable.
(when I got my 722 there was no USB cable - was there suppose to be one included with the purchase?)

Yes, if you buy it new. Mine is Firewire to USB. Firewire goes into the 722, USB into the computer. I guess this is new to you as you have not xferred anything yet. You gonna love that 722. I sure do love mine. Just run through the basic "factory settings" to modify them to what you want, save them as "user settings" and you can reload them in a flash, should you need to. Once you are set up it is turn on, set levels, push the record button, get a cup of coffee. Turn off, put away your gear, go home, xfer. And you know the 722 is going to record it right.

ADDED: be sure to use whatever to detach form your computer electronically. IN XP it is "remove hardware" or something. I cannot remember but it is an icon. In Mac I do not know nor in **nix.

FireWire and USB are very different. I know there are some converter cables (around $100 each) that allow you to have FW on one end and USB on the other end. However, this is not a common cable.
When I borrowed Fozzy's 722, I simply connected up a FW cable I had laying around to copy the files to my hard drive on my Mac.
Where are you folks finding a FW to USB cable? I don't think other than some very specialized cables, I've ever seen a FW/USB cable.

you need a 6 pin firewire for the 722 side, and either a 4, 6 or 9 pin firewire for the computer side. This will depend on your firewire card (or your built in firewire inputs if you have a Mac). 4 pins are commonly found on windows laptops only. 6 pin and 9 pin are more common on desktops. Mac laptops will have 6 pin, Mac desktops (G5 and higher) will have both 6 and 9 pin.

interesting I was not aware, but I personally would think it would be worth the investment to buy a firewire card, which can be had for around $25 or so

Also wanted to add why not just get an external FW/USB drive? That's how I transfer. In fact I've been transferring shows from the external captures for the last month. Not one issue yet. ;D

I have used the usb to firewire cable for the last two years with no problems. I guess it came with the 722 new but no longer remember? I think that it did at least. Its a silver braided cable enclosed in a clear housing. Is this what everyone else uses? Would a straight firewire cable work? I assume it would be faster as firewire is much faster than usb 2.0. if I remember correctly. I would like to know what most users use. Why would a usb to firewire be something to not trust? Just curious...

I have used the usb to firewire cable for the last two years with no problems.
I think what you have is the standard FireWire cable. When I borrowed Fozzy and his 722 for a gig, I ended up just using a standard FW cable that normally I use to mirror data off my Deva. Worked as advertised (although it did seem a bit slower than I would have expected for FireWire on my quad Mac Pro).

Whether this cable exists or not, or whether it can be trusted or not is irrelevant. I have a wire that came with my SD 722 which is plugging into the firewire port of the 722 and the USB port of my computer. As always, YMMV.

I didn't think people were using a FW to USB cable, but stranger things have happened without me knowing it.

I bought a Belkin USB 2.0/FW combo drive at Office Max for 25 bucks and a nice 12ft FW cable at Target for 15 bucks and I havent had ANY problems since :) Just plug in the FW cable to the PC/Mac, plug the other end into the 722, turn on 722, BAM, connected. Before you remove the FW cable from the 722, I right-click and hit 'eject' on my 722 icon under XP Home and it disconnects. Altho, I forgot to do this recently and just unplugged it cold from the 722, and the newer 722 firmware took it with stride and didnt freexe up like older firmwares ;D so I guess nowadays with firmware 2.15, it doesnt matter, you can just xfer teh files and unplug the FW cable from the 722 without 'disconnecting' or 'ejecting' the drive under windows like you previously had to do :)
