Garage Sale Find: Electro-Voice 654A x 3 - good for taping?
« on: October 25, 2017, 02:56:55 PM »
Picked up an old ammunition box at a sale and it was filled with three Electro-Voice 654A's.

They are dynamic omi's which seems kind of odd.  But great because I don't have phantom power anyway.

So,  if I wanted to record some live music with these,  what is the smartest setting / application / placement.  Seems like I can get a pretty good stereo field?  But what to do with the third.

Or are these not good for live music?  Better for studio set up.  Good for drum overheads?  They all sound loud and clear.  A bit flat and Ill leave that up to the musicians...

Thanks all,  ps.  the lady couldn't get the box open until I walked up, so she only charged me for the box.

Hey all,

I launched the babies and the are loud and clear,

Very even very flat.  So some post work is needed on the recording.
I recorded in a small club so the loudest noises were more present in the mix.

The mics were placed at the front of the stage and the drums seemed very far away.
Way too far.  I was expecting the opposite.

Headed back again to reconfigure.

Ps.  The bands were terrible.
