Start at this thread so you can understand the nuts and bolts of taping. It deals with aud taping, but it will give you a good frame of reference:

Hey Brian - the stickys arent working!  :-\

How about this?

...make a sticky called: (and Im not being sarcastic)

"How To Tape A Concert" - that is actually a better, more inviting title for newbies...and might command more newbie attention than
"Ask the Tapers" - which is somewhat vague - and even more confusing - the forum is called the same thing...?

i agree.
if you dont understand all the technical jargon you cant even find the info you need.
allthough i did look in the "ask the tapers" thread but i didnt see anything there that seemed to help...

thank for the link joe, very usefull information but i dont think that helps my scenario...
i guess i'll just ask the guy doing the audio what i need...

Do a search for "soundboard patch" and for whatever piece of equipment you're using to record.

If you don't have a recording device yet, then go to the "where to begin" thread and check out your options

Sorry I think "Archive" would be just as meaningless to newbies...top or bottom...

You have to invite them to click - not make them guess or hope -

Construct navigation that anticipates their needs...

(I've been designing sites professionally since the dawn of the web - so I have pretty strong opinions on this...)

If you don't have a recording device yet, then go to the "where to begin" thread and check out your options

Which will bring up nothing but stuff from "Kickdown Central..."

Is it possible to exclude certain forums from the search engine...?

i have no clue! thats my problem exactly.
a friend of mine is making a concert and asked me to take care of getting it recorded. i have no clue what i need. all i know is that ultimately i want it to end up on my computer.

sounds good, though this is a one time deal, i dont intend to start buying all kinds of equipment.

well, you will need some type of recording device.  whether or not you buy one is up to you...

What do you have at your disposal?  Can you borrow equipment from anyone?  What type of show is it?  Small club?  Do you know who's running sound?

Answers to q's like these can help us help you.  You came to the right place  ;)

Do you have any recording device?

You can record on cassette...(ok)

You can record on Hi-Fi VHS (better)

You can record on DAT (even better)

You can record on a Hard Drive (best)

Sounds like you have no mics - so you will want a board patch...

You'll need some RCA cables...or some 1/4 > RCA...or some XLR > RCA depending on where you get the board feed.

so it sounds like my best option is to record directly to my laptop.
what software do i need for that? (i assume there's a thread that covers that already)

is it actualy better to have mics rather than a board feed?

Software:

Recording : Audacity

Tracking : CD Wave

Test this setup out before you go on location....

What kind of inputs do you have on you laptop...?

thanks for the software info.
probably the only input that would help is the 1/4, although it does have the usual: firewire, usb, serial, parallal etc.

I think you mean 1/8 inch - like walkman headphones...

Set up a CD player and try to record the line out from the player to your computer...

Try to use a "hot" CD - like RAP or something bombastic...something with some high levels...

You will need a 1/8 stereo > RCA(L/R) cable -

Check your windows settings to make sure "Line In" is selected...mute the other sources...

If that works - you should be able to get a decent recording...

Hey Brian - the stickys arent working! :-\

Hmmmm...seem to work fine on my end.  PM me with the posts you think should be or are sticky that are not, in fact, sticking?  Thanks, corkscrew...

Not sure what all the confusion is about.  The very first thing users see, at the top of the screen, upon logging in:  the Start Here! section.  In which resides the Where to Begin forum.  In which resides a clearly labelled thread Getting Started: How do I make my own recordings?.  It doesn't get much easier or inviting than that, IMO.  And FWIW, I added a little blurb about soundboard recording to the Getting Started thread.

maybe when someone signs up for the board, they get an email with links to commonly asked questions in it...

Agreed, this has come up before - we plan on providing direct links to the Where to Begin forum and some of the threads therein.  I suspect, however, the intro email will go the way of user manuals:  no one ever pays attention to 'em.  At any rate, we're working on it.  :)

You have to invite them to click - not make them guess or hope -

Construct navigation that anticipates their needs...

Agreed.  See above.

Hi All-

I'm a total noob taper who has been a live music collector for years
and as cheesy as it sounds:

I just wanted to record live shows , so I could give back to the community
I had leeched from for so long.

since none of our esteemed colleagues have brought up this option yet...   the sound/lighting company should have some kind of recording device in their outboard rack, if they have both DAT and CDR, great.  have them record for you.  if they have a CDR, ask real nice if you can track the show live.  the hall may also have a device.  good luck, let us know how it goes.
