What do I need to get started??

I have been going to shows for a while now and have been trading for a couple of years(280+ shows). I have been checking some sites that deal with recording but many dont say excatlly what I need. I would like to start by getting a DAT recorder but dont know if this is what I should do first? I will be grateful for any help given. Also do I need software to convert it to a cd? How much will I need $$ to get a good setup?
