but...is the + format any good?
I've been under the impression that its the +_ format that is the best (as its universal), but i've never taken the time to learn the two formats and what the hell they represent.
still, $49 for the drive is cheap!

Don't do it. Get a multi format burner.
There are still lots of drives out there that can't read all formats. I have a drive in my work machine that won't read +R discs and it's just a couple of years old. Get a Pioneer A107. I have the A106 and it's been very reliable.

i just got a sony dual layer +/-rw, and im lovin it, very good burner
and reliable from many customer reviews on pricewatch,etc...
pioneer's are nice too, i have some home audiophile stuff

You can get a NEC 16X Double Layer DVD±RW Drive ND-3500A for $89 from Newegg. http://www.newegg.com/app/SearchProductResult.asp?DEPA=0. For $40 more you get both +/-and dual layer.

I second the NEC & Newegg recommendation. I've had an NEC 2500A from Newegg for a few months and like it a lot. The coolest thing about this model is that you can flash it w/ some new firmware and turn it into a dual-layer burner. (against company warnings)

I agree with the others...absolutely no reason not to get a dual format. Prices have been falling through the floor lately. The NEC is a good option...also look into Lite-Ons...great drives at great prices. I just picked up a 12x dual format for I think $110 after the rebates at CC

At newegg-$66- Lite-On 16x(DVD-R+R) does Double layer, doesRW,does all current flavors, also burns cd-r at a smokin' 48x. My Lite-on CD player has done at least 500 burns and the only coasters were from power outages
