Topic: Single or Dual Layer DVDs?

What is the general thought on DVD projects to enter the trading pool?

In the past I've broken shows into 2 DVDs, Set I and Set II.  But now that I've got a dual layer burner, I would like to keep it simple and compact thus burning one dual layer dvd with both sets. 

Do enough folks have dl burners now-a-days to copy and such, or will this be a pain in the ass for the masses?

i think most people have dl burners
i have been doing dl only recently
although there have been a few times i did dl and it ends up being like 6gb and i feel i wasted money and should have made it 2 singles
but thats just me being a cheap ass at times

Just make sure you get +R DL.  The difference is that -R has a set layer break.  They will burn to the end of layer 1 and then go to layer 2.  On +R you can choose where you want the layer break to be so playback will be smoother when it switches layers.

ImgBurn is the best program for burning DL and it's free.

Verbatim +R DL is the most reliable media.

even when setting the layer break in imgburn I've had problems with layer transitions not being seamless.  and this is on a nice oppo player.  I stick with splitting onto two for now.

i have never seen -r DL discs but i have heard they exist
i have also not seen a -r DL burner EVER

99% of players will not make a seemless break at layer points because (mostly) the laser needs to change layers and direction (if you have it set so the laser doesn't change direction then it is a even bigger pause)

I'll be authoring with DVD Studio Pro, so I'll dig around the manual and see if I can control the breakpoint.  I seem to remember seeing an option for that, but I'll double check. 

I am really leaning towards DL at this point.

I haven't authored a dvd in about a year, but yes, I'm pretty sure you can.

You pretty much have to go to an antique shop these days if you're in the market for a DVD-5 only burner.

Having said that......

DL disks never came down in price like single layer disks.  Not that many people buy the DL disks because of the cost and the fact you almost never need them.

What'll happen if you author a show as a DL disk project - many (most?) people will download it and split it into two disks.  You can do this easily and quickly.  But oftentimes, the menu is disabled.

So now the project you put all that work into is being traded around as 2-disk version with no menus.  Before you know it, someone will get it, and re-author it with menus - and now there is a third version out there.

I avoid all this by simply authoring 2-disk versions of pretty much everything I author.

dvd sp you MUST tell it where to set the break point
it has a automatic option but it doesn't really work the way you would think it would
when your dvd is ready to go you "build" once the build is done you "burn"
the 2nd tab in burn is where you tell it what break point to use and it will only allow you to use breakpoints that can actually work
if therte is no options then you have no markers that will work and you need to add one somewhere
