Not on topic of the new actives but joining the group with a ck1x set up. Set of PFAs being made over at Naiant to be sent to Ted for terminating with the Lemo to be used with any P48 pre. :D
No connecters just a dedicated active cable. Got the caps yesterday, hoping the cable will be here and in the field by next weekend.

Allsum! Could you explain a little more?
So you just bought caps? I get the pfa stuff but who came up with the rest and how does it work?
AND DEAR GAWD LET THIS BE THE LAST EDITION OF THE AKG ACTIVE THREAD. 5 is enough.

Honestly, I don't know anything about it. Ted had at least two working versions (one w/ 12v tinybox, that I think got "thrown away," and one with the Naiant PFA) so I would assume Ted came up with the way to use the Lemo with a 12v power source, maybe with some help from Naiant. jmbell suggested I could go this route, so I asked Ted if he made the lemo connector cable for purchase to use with a Naiant PFA and he said yes. He then suggested I have Jon over at Naiant make the PFAs with 15' leads to be sent to him (Ted) for terminating with the proper lemo connector. Reasoning being, since it was already going to be a dedicated ck1x cable on one end, might as well hard wire the PFA on the other instead of using inter-connectors.
Caps arrived yesterday, cable is ordered and paid for. Still at Naiant for now, but hopefully should be shipped to Ted in the next few days.

Feb. 22, 2012
Some day my Actives will come...
-
Is there any sort of update here? At all?
I mean the Collettes were made and fit. The boards had to be stuffed and then someone was going to run them.
This was what, october/november? What happened with the TEST PAIR that were supposed to pull heat at xmas?
Update????
-
Jon has yet to send out the test pair...Preamp Sales too strong...
Itgoestooeleven has started his own Gefell active project and has a AKG CK61 pair to test too...
I reserve the right to be totally wrong...
-
Yeah I have been reading, but there really haven't been any updates that have any substance.
Well except for 11's attempt at this. I think it's just a frustrating topic in general. Rollercoaster style.

I've been getting regular updates from eleven by PM since he has my caps. He's had them ~1 mo and has been making substantial progress. I'll let him speak for himself, but I'm encouraged at where things are with his solution.

Does this mean making custom active cables to separate the capsule and body of the SMS2000 series?
If so - please do you have a link?
Thanks.

I just did a huge double take on that - it can't have been a month! It hasn't been two weeks yet - I received them feb 11 :P
Time waiting on actives is like dog years. One week is seven. But if that's true, we've been waiting on this since, 2005? So it's been 35 years.
I am getting Gefell and AKG prototypes today from the machinist. I have stuffed boards performing well in test. Things are moving quickly. When I am satisfied with the initial performance, I will send the prototypes out for others to test.
Also, the relationship with the machinist means I will likely be producing mounting bars. They will not be mere copies of the stuff currently on the market. I think you'll be surprised. But the immediate focus is the actives.
-
Does this mean making custom active cables to separate the capsule and body of the SMS2000 series?
yes, sort of. It may turn out (in an over-simplified way) to be capsule > cable > powering module instead of the sms2000 bodies, but yes it's a separation of the capsule from the body.
If so - please do you have a link?
unfortunately, not really, it's more of a word of mouth setup right now. The folks who were interested in it sort of camp out in the AKG thread.

Thanks.

are you "teamed up" with jon or are the boards and stuff your own?
what are we talking power wise? 48v or less

Just trying to not oversell things for you while still showing folks there's hope! FYI I just became the owner of paulbaptist's complete AKG set, so I'll have omni caps to test too. >:D
Edit to add that also means I will be able to do a comp between full bodies vs actives with the cards > R44.
Also, the CK61 caps that eleven is testing with will go to the YS if nobody on this thread wants them. PM me if you're interested.

Oh the effing IRONY THAT IS 11 coming up with an AKG solution!
Well done sir!

Naiant has one to. He's just real busy with the tinybox. Patience. Summer is still 3 1/2 months away.

Yesterday it snowed 7 inches where I live. Though I had snow occasionally at my last house during the official months of summer, so snowfall and summertime are not mutually exclusive.

Brian,
I just sent you a PM 5 minutes ago regarding the possibility of mounting bars for the gefell actives before reading this thread. :coolguy: Keep up the good work and bring fantasy into the realm of reality!
Team Gefell thanks you!

Off topic of ck6x, but received my ck1x "active cable" today. Ted/Jon hybrid. Naiant PFA on one end and Ted fit the lemos on the other.
The lemos don't quite fit as snuggly as I'd like in the audix micro clips after adding a layer of felt but will most likely work for now.
More excited showing off pics here: http://s1172.photobucket.com/albums/r578/achalsey/AKG%20ck1x%20custom%20active/

delrin/pvc bar, saw a notch on both ends, drill a hole through the notch, and butcher the clip ends of the delivered mounts at the screw joint and insert that into the notch (and drop a screw through all three sections). Now you have an adjustable angle kwonbar-style setup. Add a nut on the bottom of the screw and you could have a locking angle even. I'm going to dig out the tools either this weekend, or the second weekend in May and tinker with it.

Got ya. Sounds simple enough...well cutting Delrin, not so much.

As the saying goes; "where there's a will (and excellent powertools), there's a way."
Likely I'll do the prototype out of thick wall PVC just because it's handy. I'm not even sure where I'd get delrin rods in this town... Likely have to order them.

Yep, I'd have to order them as well. Every time I have tried to cut it on my band saw I end up melting it.

I work in a ceramics manufacturing machine shop a long while ago. We used Delrin to make fixtures to hold the ceramic as it was being machined.
We used a lathe to cut and shape the Delrin. It worked very well doing it that way.

I totally watched RedGreen when I lived up north.
On that note, if someone knows of anything lighter than delrin or PVC, I'm open to suggestions.
-
delrin is perfecto guys :)

Have you considered 3/4" hardwood dowel? Certainly lighter than delrin, maybe even lighter than the PVC. Not too expensive, can be found in most hardware stores, easy to work with, even if you just make the prototype with it.

That is what I was considering for a test. I have a few pieces around the house. It would certainly be easier (for me) to work than Delrin.

Seriously? For some reason I would have thought that to be heavier than PVC (note, I'm likely going to use the pipe, not the solid stuff).
-
So......did I mention I would buy a set for my Gefell's?

It is so disappointing....

eleven still has my extra CK61s. He PM'd me ~2 weeks ago that he got sidetracked slightly, but is still working on it. No ETA given, but there has been progress.

MUST RESIST POSTING ON THIS THREAD (http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=155474.0)
I'll let him speak for himself regarding the details, but it sounds like he is being very meticulous.

Well I still have a machinist waiting for me to give him an order for the collettes. I'm just waiting for Jon to approve the collette design and Chuck to test them. I know nothing about the other prospect. What I do know is that this is a "side job" for Jon. It will happen someday. :)

this. I've had some discussions with him on how to accomplish this and he is being very meticulous.
When someone finally puts this out, buy 2 sets in case you torch one of them cause they won't come around again... :P

Please clarify who you two are speaking of...Jon or itgoestoeleven...and if you have information on the project from either...PLEASE tell us what is going on...that is the biggest frustration...not knowing if it is proceeding...at a impasse....or just around the corner...

We've been in contact about Gefell work, but the projects are largely related. He's very methodical was really my point.

I was talking about eleven as well.

AKG actives are "just around the corner" and I am actively working on them.
Gefell and Schoeps versions are also in progress.

Awesome news, 11. Realize you're actively working on the actives (that sounded redundant, didn't it?) but do you have any ETA? Will be curious to see how they sound because the I'm well versed in recordings made with CK61/3 caps and 480 bodies.

They just look so weird w/ the brass active body :)

Casey Birchwood makes a product that will turn the brass black....just soak the colette in 50/50 diluted Muriatic Acid for 10 minutes...remove with tweezers and rinse...then use the Brass Black

Once I have AKG active collettes in my hands (that work of course), I won't care if they're if they're painted pink with unicorn stickers on them. I might even add glitter.

what is the anticpated cost to get in on this and will they run into a marantz pmd661 oade mod recorder direct?
how will stack up against the milabs links or the beyers ck930s which i have now? cost wise and sound wise (dark, light, bright, mid)? i guess i need to read more and will do that but didn't want to miss this once they hit, there is probably so much interest i might miss the boat anyway i guess....thanks.
-
The quest for AKG actives has been 6 years in the making. Maybe they really are just around the corner at this point. Even so, there is no cost info out on them, and nobody really knows what they will sound like.
As a starting point, they will probably sound somewhat like AKG 460/480's with ck6x caps. I tend to think they will sound similar to the jklabs ECMS active setup, or like the jwilliams mod460s. You could spend some time on archive.org and listen to sample recordings of all of the above mics and form your own opinion. Personally, I find the above akg incarnations to sound on the brighter side of the scale, with slightly scooped mids. But I'm sure others will hear them differently.
-
Nija...for price nothing has ever been stated as the final cost...Naiant made noise in some old threads that the cost would run in the $250 range...for a PFA...and install of electronics in a supplied Colette...you still have to pay for the Colette and Cable between the two...there is also the TinyBox route which involves the cost of a Preamp so it would be more.
itgoestoeleven's version we have no idea what his solution will cost...thru the grapevine I've heard it is a bit different electronically than the Naiant offering...I'll let him speak for himself

The cost is years and years of your time .... 8)
If you're trying to get in the new mics game now and want something of this form factor and approx price, look at MBHOs and Milabs.

Yeah and I ride a unicorn to work everyday. There are about 2500 posts and years worth of info deadicated to this topic and still nothing has materialized. I will believe when I see it!
But hey people can dream....if they want too.
-
Yeah and I ride a unicorn to work everyday.
Sure hope ya don't ride on its head. ;)
As for followinbob's course, I think it's valid, and I most certainly encourage the efforts, yet I'm basing that upon a few assumptions. FB's been a member here since 2004. Granted, he/she may not have kept up with all the TS gossip, but my guess is he/she has perused these AKtive threads. Yes, there is a serious market amongst us for these types of products. Just look at what Jon Stoppable (@ Naiant) has done for us. I'd pony up for a Gefell rig in seconds depending on current funds. The problem (to me) doesn't appear to be the physical "collettes", but the active circuitry, which varies amongst mic brands.
Are you going to customize each and every pair of machined "collettes" with the respective electronics? Will you continue to supply product support down the line (again, assuming 'yes')? I'm certainly not asking you to delve into all your business "details" but you haven't shared much about the electronics. As one member mentioned in the other thread, "not trying to bust balls", just more curious than anything.
We're an excitable bunch is all. :)

I have a work bench covered with shit that suggests otherwise ;)
Developing a quality product takes time. And then transitioning those prototypes to production with a process that takes a reasonable amount of labor per unit also takes time. Those hours and hours, and the cost to bootstrap it, all must be put in and paid by someone. I don't like to think about the time I've spent sourcing components and putting together order on Mouser and the like. And then someone needs to front the money for manufacturing. Hopefully you don't screw up - or have a supplier issue - and get stuck with a bunch of hardware you can't use. In the meantime, life goes on and you work on it when you can; hopefully finding large blocks of time.
-
^^ Would a Kickstarter help? I agree that you shouldn't "guess" what the market would be.

I get it but this concept / idea / R+D whatever you want to call it has been going since 2/15/2006. I know Rome was not built in a day. I totally get life gets in the way, people drop in and out of the project, 6 years and 8 months is a long time to be developing this. I guess I have gotten spoiled with the pace in which some other builders have made and brought to market from concept to product in a matter of months. I am sure once this product hits many people will be happier than a dog with 2 dicks :P... I apologize for my ill concieved sarcasm. OOK

Wait, I thought taping was always in season? ???
Maybe I need to pack up my taping gear alongside my camping gear.
-
Well, that's basically how I record since I don't have a license and go to festies with tone deaf in the summer. Without tone deaf, I might record 5 shows a year. With toned ears help, I prob record aroun 250+ sets a year!!! Thanks tone deaf!!!!

i tape just as much if not more in the "off season"

I said it as a joke, but may have to be serious -- so many or a lot of tapers record mainly during a season? And that season would then be the summer?
I really had no idea. Music and taping happens year round out here in CO. I don't even know there is more taping to be had during the summer. Besides bluegrass festivals (Telluride and Rockygrass), we're probably not a huge summertime festival location (though there are other festivals at Telluride and Planet Bluegrass). We get shows coming all the time, and probably due to colleges and ski season, usually get pretty regular runs of music in the fall and spring, plus NYE runs.
Seemed like I taped pretty consistently year round when I lived in DC too.
Maybe I need to hold onto all the gear I want to sell, and sell it in the late spring in anticipation of this taping season thingy. :D
-
Well, when you have cancer you're being treated for, and you're off the road for a few months at a time, you look at your taping activities more as "seasons". :P

No worries bud. I have thyroid cancer and I've had it all removed. Only thing left is to take a couple radioactive iodine pills and I should be done. It's been a tough road since about August, but I should be done this all by Christmas. I had my thyroid, my left tonsil, and 21 lymph nodes removed from the left side of my neck. Pretty extensive surgery, but I should recover 100%. Thanks much! I'll be heading back out to the shows soon. My goal is an end of year moe.run. ;D
-
Way to go Myco! Livestrong.
We might need to start a Team Survivors thread.
Taping was very therapeutic for me when I was recovering. I needed the additional motivation to keep pushing myself to regain strength and stamina and getting out to shows, hanging with the other local tapers, and keeping my mind off medical shit really made a huge difference in getting back to "normal."
Sorry to hear you got sick but its great to hear you have a plan to conquer those pesky screwed up cells.
Sorry for the thread hijack. I've been fascinated with this project for years and keep reading to see what will happen next. Anybody else notice the North Koreans' announced that they discovered a Unicorn lair roughly about the exact same time 2 AKG actives projects became a reality? Coincidence?
-
Glad to hear myco

Good stuff Myco!

+T Myco on a successful recovery.

Thanks much! And I will thank anyone else who might think of wishing well. I don't want to hijack this thread anymore than I seem to have done. :P I look forward to seeing some form of these actives coming out in the near future! :)

Sorry to hear of this Myco and I'm also glad you're staying positive through this. Cancer's a b!tch and I can fully relate to how badly it sucks as my other half has been dealing with breast cancer (in her mid-30's) and has just finished chemo with surgery and radiation "to look forward to" starting in January. It's definitely put a huge kink into our concert plans (nevermind life in general) as we pretty much nixed all summer festival shows this year because we weren't feeling it.
And Todd R, that was some pretty clever stuff. I think most of my gear has remained packed up this summer/fall (since April, I've been to four shows and have recorded all four -- normally that would've been somewhere between 40 and 60 shows in the past six or seven months.

So Jon's product is $100/pair.
And followingbob's is $450?
Did I read that right?

I read it as Jon/Nainat as being closer to 220 a pair..so you must have read that wrong. Don't be hate'n :P
-
From Jon's Post...
Couplings, pair: $108
PFA, 3' lead, pair: $100
extra cable, per foot (each PFA): $2
A stock tinybox with 3' adaptor cable would be $288
Looks like $108 a pair (before PFA and Tiny Box)

Do the couplings include the cables? Do you have to get the pfa to get the cables to the couplings?

6 1/2 hours to sell 12 or 6 sets?
Looks like there is a demand for this...hope someone picks up the ball and keeps it going....
-
Do the couplings include the cables? Do you have to get the pfa to get the cables to the couplings?
I think cables are the easiest (and most boring) part of the product. They are a commodity, ordered by the roll or foot.
-
6 1/2 hours to sell 12 or 6 sets?
6 sets, 12 pieces.
-
i have hundereds of pieces. with real pin sockets. gefells spring loaded like the bodies. hhhmmmmmmm
these are not a hole drilled in a piece of brass that is threaded. they are nice pieces. i do work for honneywell, bexid, allied signal,lockeed,boeing...etc
60% military/aircraft and 40% high end drag racing parts.
-
i have hundereds of pieces.
I'm pretty sure he was referencing Jon's set from the retail thread yesterday.

That's awesome bob.! BTW, what are you going to name your active cables ??? ??? Bobs KCYs? Bobs collettes. BBox as in nbox BBox actives?
-
i am NOT taking a shot at you jon. i have stated many times i respect what you are doing. there are many really smart folks here. i only make mechanical components. i cannot do what you do jon. you did not make the colettes anyway. i am only posting regaurding my design and my workmanship.
-
That's good. There shouldn't be any mud-slinging as there are lots of expensive items around here.

mine are my own dimensions ect. it doesnt matter jon. i think we are all making nice stuff. and i do push your tiny box. noone is getting rich here. we do it because we like recording.

sort of a hijack, but everyone is talking about AKG so... do the DPA UA0896 fit well over CK 6x caps?
Back to the thread, those collettes looks amazing.
-
Been reading all of the multiple threads and trying to get things straight. I'm looking to get an AKG caps -> active cable -> Tinybox setup as straightforward as possible.
followinbob does the machining/powder coat of the couplings
schoepsnbox does the install of the electronics and the cabling and handles the sales
... but where are the electronics/PCB coming from? Is it the same Naiant circuitry from this design or somewhere else?
Chuck's comparison: http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=159568.0
Naint's for sale: http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=160205.0
I'm starting from scratch, so I assume I buy the cables from schoepsnbox with the 6-pin termination and the Tinybox from Naint - do I need to specify anything to Naint other than that I want the 6-pin mini-XLR connector and that it is for the schoepsnbox/followinbob AKG actives?
I want the final product to be just like Schoeps version darktrain posted here, except AKG:
http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=160089.0
Photos look great!
I used a borrowed JKLabs DVC AKG setup about a dozen years and really dug it.

sort of a hijack, but everyone is talking about AKG so... do the DPA UA0896 fit well over CK 6x caps?
Back to the thread, those collettes looks amazing.

Cool, thanks.

From Jon's Post...
Couplings, pair: $108
PFA, 3' lead, pair: $100
extra cable, per foot (each PFA): $2
A stock tinybox with 3' adaptor cable would be $288
Looks like $108 a pair (before PFA and Tiny Box)
To me that looks like $208 per mic. - $416 for a pair of mics. - with a 3' cable.
-
Naiants are around $220-$260 depending on cable length if you go the PFA route. That is a great deal.
-
Jon's are $108 a pair.
Bob's are $450 a pair.
That must be some really expensive powder coat.
-

And a Schoeps KCY is around $900 - so what's your point
There are a lot of items that drive costs including but not limited too:
- design time
- design complexity
- build time
- local taxes and fees - (i.e. to have my LLC I have to pay $300 every year to the gov't - which I eat)
- import taxes
- payroll
- cost of living adjustments

There really must be something in the air. All my co-workers are riled up here. ???
-
I have to do the LLC as my wife is a CFA/CPA and if we don't do things by the book she could loose these very hard to acquire accreditedations
It's important to note that followingbob is in NYC whereas Jon is in rural NC - I would be willing to bet the cost of living adjustment alone explains most of the cost difference
-
duct tape on mouth right now. or should i say fingers taped together so i can't type. just finished lockeed job. going to make some 2 foot wide, multi pair mic bars now.

The KC5 couplers, a more valid comparison, are $634 a pair, last I looked. I could tell you why the KC5 is a better product, but I'll wait a while.
CNC machine time is priced as a commodity in dollars per hour. There are many thousands of shops that can make these parts. For cheap.

The Schoeps connection is much more complex and superior to the AKG bayonet style. From the pictures I have seen, Followinbob's machining looks amazing. I don't see why people must cunt up this thread.

I don't get why people are complaining about pricing. Don't buy them if you think they are too expensive. It's that simple.
-
We know Jons sounds good http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=159568.0 , We can assume follows does too
are the differences in cost worth it based on the rest of the design/setup? Thats a personal thing each individual needs to weigh.
I feel there are plus/minus to both designs for me. (for example)
do they replace the body
do they fit a kwon bar or do I need another mount
can the cables be fixed easy/changed in length fast and easy
are they easy to stealth
Do Jons cover all of these/does Follows cover all of these? Is there something one has over the other? is there something Follows has that makes it worth the extra money? All of these depend on each user and each user should weigh their options.
I think everyone at least thought for a minute why is this one more or less then the other - now just look at the complete design and see which one is best for you.
I don't feel people need to give either design a hard time because they both are progress and imo good.
On the flip side I don't feel people need to give a member a hard time for posting their opinions/questions.
Thanks to everyone who has worked on these including 11 and here's to hoping his comes to life too

This. As I see it these are the questions:
1. Is there a manufacturer-based solution? (For Schoeps, yes, AKG, sort-of (the out-of-production CK1x), Gefell, no)
2. Do you like the price? (and if you have a branded alternative, relative to that alternative?)
3. Do you like the sound?
4. Does the convenience/form factor improve you rig?
5. Does it work with your existing stuff?
To me, the AKG and Gefell solutions are the most exciting because they don't have any existing in-production product they compete with. Not that the Schoeps solution doesn't also have good things to say for it, but it obviously has Schoeps-branded products to compete against.
As to the price of one set vs. the other, well, the prices for both ought to be what the market will bear. Once they've both seen more time in the field I am sure people will have opinions. And what is right for one person may not be for another.
-
I don't see why people must cunt up this thread.
Funny, coming from someone who rips off designs.
-
People have been talking about this stuff for years (and there was ONLY talk) now that a few folks
have the balls to take it to completion, there are complaints.....the market will dictate the price.
I'm sure lots of Gefell users won't be waitin on a cheaper solution. Thanks guys, can't wait to try em.

which were ripped off by Kwon from Schoeps originally, so STFU. I only made the mounts b/c apparently nobody was making them anymore and I wanted some of my own. I also added the following mounts to the line: ORTF, wORTF, MidSide, short Vertical Address AB, long Vertical Address AB. Anything esle? :-*

Schoeps never produced the vertical address bar. That was my design.

there was a void, i put up the cash to have them made, and finally I delivered the product. less yapping, more action. keep in mind that I never did this to make money but simply to satisfy people's demand for it. I have a day job and this is pretty much a waste of my time.
-
alot of work inside these things to make them lighter. yes the .315 diameter is same as schoeps on all colettes to fit the bars out there. thought about right angle side exit to make them shorter and lighter but you would need my hat clips. i would also have to make mini shock mounts for the stand guys. if i run my schoeps open taping i use the bodies though so i don't understand just putting capsules on a stand.
as far as stealing someones design louie and i both had the idea for a bar i am making. the one i already made is too cool, beefy and i am sure too expensive for 90% of the people on here. it is capable of putting probably 10 pairs of mics on it. maybe more.
-
don't think he was referring to the 2' bar but rather the delrin stereo mounts.
-
if i run my schoeps open taping i use the bodies though so i don't understand just putting capsules on a stand.
it's useful for situations where you're supposed to keep a very limited visual imprint (either to hide that you're taping a band that allows taping, but not where you're setup, or when you're running on stage or stage lip). Thats the biggest use. The only other one I've seen is weight; if you have to put 10 or 15+ pairs of mics on a stand without exceeding the weight limitations of support equipment.
-
idk. i have a beefy stand. i am a steath guy anyway. schoeps---->722. all the fuss about tiny stuff and i have never not sneaked it in and i have never been caught going in. been snitched out twice inside the show. people i know did it too. came up with the 2 foot wide beefy bar through taping los lobos. a few places we were at there was only room for one stand. just thought it would be cool to fit everyone if we had to.

make it as lightweight as possible. did you determine a stock thickness?
-
yes. i was talking about the other bar louie. the one we discussed is light. still can do 3-4 pairs no problem.

look forward to seeing the finished product. thanks for taking on the project

in response to the talk about price. what is my time worth? 3 different mics in 2 months. how long do you think all this takes? and what about jobs i am not doing while making the prototypes and then the production parts? so i loose money there. you think i am getting rich on colettes? what about nick's time designing the circuits? testing? all i can say about what we are doing is that because we make everything we can also replace or repair it. not with weeks lead time like other who have sold stuff on this site. the mechanical components have warranty. you screw it up then you pay. if i messed up i will replace it free. who is offering you that? just take that into consideration when buying. lots of cool stuff will be coming out of here in the future. we have alot of ideas.
the powering options that jon from niant designed and made are perfect for this. we all do this because we love recording. there are a lot of smart people on here making cool stuff. gotta love that.

louie gets a free one. lol

Kudos to all the builders for bringing this home. My only complaint is that y'all waited until a couple of weeks after I sold most of my AKG stuff! :angry2:

Im not even trying... caps run around $750 a piece brand new (each). Thats not cheap, but finding them used before an active solution was tough enough...
-
Thats not cheap
Certainly not. But my other (wishful) alternative is the DPA route, which would end up being more....at least, for the new "compact" setup offered by them. I've always longed for Gefells and with a new job going, it seems like the possibility is ever increasing.

Which DPA? The compact stereo kit is like 3500. However the 2011c's are 799 each. Not sure if they would be good for what we do. ??? Too bad the Gefells are 1500 new.
-
Yeah, I was referring to the compact stereo kit.

The AKG route is definitely the most economical and, assuming this hits any kind of scale, would be by far the least expensive HQ rig going, considering that even buying new you would not be that far above $1k for a complete rig.
MBHO caps also also closer to AKG in price...

If a right-angle setup can be done, sort of like a DPA 4021, mark me down for a set. Hat clips or mini shock mounts might be nice, but I'd have no problem using elastic bands in my hat, and mic clips on a shock-mounted bar. DPA shock mounts like the CSM4000 would probably work too. I'm certainly open to anything else you come up with, but I don't think a lack of mounting options is a hindrance to a right-angle setup, at least not for me.
I think a lot of us end up in situations where we're allowed to openly record, but keeping a low profile is still a requirement. I taped a show at City Winery last week and the primary requirement was that my mics not interfere with anyone's sight lines. Flying only the capsules made that a lot easier. Plus, let's not forget that your active cables plus a set of Naiant's PFAs would cost about half as much as a used pair of CMC6 bodies. I haven't had a chance to do a PFA vs CMC comparison yet, but I have a feeling the less expensive solution will more than hold its own.
Keep up the good work!
-
Finally now a lot more ppl will love the axtive setup. Its so easy and foolproof youll never look baxk!

I had always heard that was Bill Reutelhuber's design.
Nick and Bill are working on this together. Back in the day I convinced bill to undertake the development by buying the original set of MK4 capsules. Those are the caps I use today.

Hope to catch you out there at a show sometime in the near future! I think trying Brian directly might be the best way to find out David. He has asked about you many times. I don't think he's closer to getting to market than these fine people are, but I may be wrong.

Thanks for the reply Mike. I will follow your advice. I am anxious to put my Gefell sms2000 series caps to work in 2013. I still haven't run the new omni caps or my "re-skinned by Gefell" card caps. I need to remedy that.
I'd LOVE to see you out somewhere this year!

Definitely not Naiant actives. According to Chuck the binders Naiant use fit well in the Audix micro clips which are significantly larger than the SGC clips. If Bob's fit in a NOLA bar though, they should fit a SGC.
-

Yes, I did. Active Cables from Nick and PFA & Tiny Box from Jon.
When are you supposed to get them?
I should have the cables by the end of next week. I ordered my pfa & tiny box on 1/16 so 2/13 will be 4 weeks (typical Nainat turn around). Hopefully I will have the rig all set for the Marco Benevento gigs here in portsmouth, NH on 3/15 & 3/16 should have said Club d'Elf on 2/15 or Kimock at Tupelo Music Hall.

So I know that the AKG active solutions are now a reality, however reading through the threads in the market place I am having a really hard time determining what the exact cost is for a phantom power active set up minus the cost of AKG caps. Any help?
-
Naiant only offered a limited run and they are all spoken for, I think.
Nick/followingbob cablesare $450 and need a pfa, tinybox or nbox to power them. Pfa are around $80, tinyboxs are around $240 and I don't know how much an nbox is.

Read Jon's post towards the end of his thread in the Retail Space. For P48, it's around $220 + shipping. First two batches are spoken for. He's taking names for the third run already.

my naiant version are 15 feet (4 feet for undercover with 11 foot extension for open) and with shipping cost $214
I already own a tb and didn't need/want pfa version

My first outing with Following bob and Nick's Active cables. Half the show with a PFA and the other half with a tiny box.

My Naiant AKG Active/PFA from batch 3 has arrived...just ordered some CK63's....Living the DREAM!1!
Cool to hear. I'm waiting on cables with a TinyBox so it's gonna be a bit longer but can't wait to be running them, either.

Long time no post. Remember when this was a dream?
From Front to Back on a followingbob wide bar:
AKG ck1x > Custom mk46 GAKable > Naiant PFA in a Custom DIN GAKbar
AKG ck61 > NBob AKG Couplers > Custom GAKable > Naiant PFA in a NOLA DIN Bar
AKG ck61 > Naiant AKG Couplers > Custom GAKable > Naiant PFA in a it-goes-to-eleven DIN Bar
I smell a comp in the near future ;D

Nice to see you too Mike! I need to get up to speed on Brian's Gefell active project. Would one of you mind sending me a PM on the Gefell subject with more detail? Thank you in advance.
David
And me too please
and me as well please cause after reading this entire thread and several of the posts linked in it, I still can't tell what is available and from whom

PM schoepsnbox for the setup. The colette is machined by followingbob for Gefell or AKG. schopesnbox installs the electronics and supplies a colette with pigtail or Switchcraft EN3 Nbox connector
To power it you need a PFA from Jon Naiant (you terminate pigtail to PFA or get Switchcraft EN3 Nbox connector on PFA) or a new Platinum NBox, unless you have a Tinybox for Nbox Actives (which supports all NBox Actives - AKG, Gefell and Schoeps).
I reserve the right to be WRONG about any and all of the above, but, I did entertain purchasing a Gefell setup and that was my understanding

this is how I purchased mine...worth every penny.

Thank you gentlemen. The gefells get their first outtings this weekend. I'll decide if I want to go the active route with them after listening to the recording(s).
