New rig questions.

I am currently taping with a Sony ECM957-D8 and I am going to stick with my D8 for a little while longer, but I want to upgrade my mics.  I was thinking of going with the AKG381(because of price)-Apogee minime and was wondering if that is a adequate setup.  Also, I was wondering about powering the preamp.  Where do I get something to power it where I have no power source?  I would appreciate any help.  Thanks.

Do you mean AKG 391? Since you said (Because of price) I'm assuming you did, since AKG 481s are quite expensive.

It depends on how often you want to keep upgrading.  If you're serious about making good mic tapes you may outgrow the 391s pretty quickly (just my opinion - no bashers please!)  You do get what you pay for when it comes to mics.  If you want something you'll be happy with for a very long time, you need to spend the money on the front end.  Good mics will do just OK with a cheap pre, and great with a HQ one of course.  Cheap mics will do just OK with a cheap pre, and just OK with a HQ one.

Just my opinion of course.  Don't know what that's worth though.
