Sloping dB in recording???
« on: September 17, 2006, 12:14:38 PM »
last night i recorded Wolfmother.  Everything looks like it went ok, but when i threw the file in SF, i noticed that the dB's (or volume) had a wierd slope near the end of the set.  I think i lowered the volume at one point, but do not believe it was that much.  The volume was lowered b/c the sound was insanely loud which is why i adjusted the volume.

i have attached two screen shots.  one is a wide shot showing the slope, and the other is a close up (1:1) on the wave about 1/2 through the affected segment.

my 3 theories, in order of my mind's probability:
* battery power diped in the mp-2 and caused this (the voltage was checked at 2.3v this morning with 2 energizer rechargables)
* the loud volume brickwalled my little at's  :( (there is a first time for everything)
* i over adjusted the volume, and didnt realize it (but that wouldnt account for the gradual decrease after the fact)

i am willing to entertain other ideas... i just want to make sure it doesnt happen again (if it was operator error)

oh, the gear:
AT853a (c) > SD MP-2 > ihp120
about 35' back from the stage, dfc.

**edited voltage to correct value**

I’m going with a drop in voltage which then caused the Mp2 to start brickwalling.

Notice how compressed "looking" it becomes.  That’s what Leeds me to the brickwalling.

I think the battery supply to your mics is the culpret. I let the batteries run a little too long in my Art Phanton II power for my mics, and it resulted in exactly the same wav form. Since that time I've been more meticulous in tracking the number of hours on my batteries.
Primary: Peluso CEMC6/CK-4/CK-21 > Fostex FR2-LE or Tascam DR-680
Secondary: Edirol R09-HR
