What is the limiting factor with the JB3 accepting a 24 bit signal...?
Software or Hardware?

I was thinking about this again the other day.
you can put 24bit files on the Jb3 aslong as there under the 2gb limit.
with a third party driver it would seem that the Jb3 could be used as portable HD and be used VIA lappy/IPAQ > Firewire > JB3
I would think we just need someone to write a driver for it to be able to record VIA firwire. as it can play VIA firwire ..

Except again, the entire OS would have to be rewritten because the JB3 does not act as a standalone hard drive.
And recording over firewire would be even more involved...

Yeah, it only contains a 16bit processor, which is why the 8 bits are truncated when it is sent a 24 bit signal.

I believe the Notmad software makes Windows think the JB3 is a drive in Explorer, however that doesn't change the fact that the JB3 can't operate as a standalone hard drive.

Well the 24 bit path is this:
24-bit data path for Analog-to-Digital Converter (ADC) and Digital-to-Analog Converter (DAC)
Except a digital input bypasses the ADC. It appears that chip handles the analog inputs and outputs, but does not handle the digital input.

Yeah, it only contains a 16bit processor, which is why the 8 bits are truncated when it is sent a 24 bit signal.

If you load a 24 bit wav onto your JB3 - Will it play back via the JB3 line out?

I don't have any knowledge of part numbers or anything like that, just what was told to me by others that the digital input only has the hardware capacity for 16bits.

There is a huge difference in how the data is sent and how the data must be interpreted.
