LSD2 or VP88
« on: January 09, 2008, 10:48:03 PM »
I've read 'all' (well most) of the threads about stereo mics, etc.

There's an LSD2 in the Yard Sale forum and a VP88 at my local store. (about the same price < price a marginal consideration)

I will be traveling to Europe with it to record college concert bands/orchestras.
My recording rig will take up my carry-on and part of my 1 checked bag so I
would prefer it be rugged, not too heavy, internal battery (Phantom eats up the batteries on my Marantz 660)

Looks like the VP-88 wins...but....I like the flexibility of the LSD2 (not ONLY M/S)

anyone care to convince me to get the LSD2 from a forum member

Thanks

My vote is for the vp-88.  That is a nice mic and the options for mid-side make it very flexible along with the fact that you need as small a rig as possible.  For what it sounds like you need, the vp-88 is the way to go.  Much smaller footprint over the lsd2 as well.

I think the VP88 is definitely a better match for your needs.  The LSD2 is a beast.  It sounds very nice for the price, but it's big and heavy.

Even with the extra options of the LSD2, I greatly prefer M/S over X/Y cards.  Blumlein can be nice though.

Thanks guys.  That was quick, easy, and relatively painless!
Didn't take much convincing
Gonna go with the VP88

Update:

Found very clean VP88 on ebay

First test tonight.  Ran M/S and aside from plugging the mid into right and side into left, sounds great! (once I swapped channels and decoded.)  This is definitely going to Ireland with us.

Forgot how short the 5-pin xlr->2x3-pin adapter is.  I need to get a hydra.  (see my request in Yardsale

Thanks again for the advice
