playing back shns and flacs
« on: September 16, 2003, 01:18:18 AM »
Hey guys.. I think I'm going to pick up a couple of hard drives and transfer all of my flac and shn discs to the hd's for easier playback. For the time being I will need to run analog out of my desktop soundcard (zoltrix nightengale pro 6) and then into my NAD 370.

My main question is, what program would you suggest I use to playback the shns and flacs on the pc? Right now I just use winamp and the associated plug-ins. Does anyone know of any other (better sounding) programs to use for playback?

And while typing this I started to look at my setup and thought about running digi out of the soundcard into my da20mkII, in rec/pause and then use the d/a stage in the da20mkII. Does anyone know how long the deck will stay in rec/pause? Is this bad? I'm thinking it will engage the rec head and thus put unnecessary wear on the head.

I know the ultimate answer is to just get a nice dac but that's not happening anytime soon, unfortunately.

Thanks guys!

tim, how about your receiver or preamp?  i use my receiver to decode from the digi-coax out on my soundcard through winamp...works great, you just need to increase the buffer size in winamp.

yeah, I've got no digi ins at all. The NAD 370 is an integrated and only has analog ins.

i'm just not thrilled about the sonic possibilities of running mini out of the zoltrix into the NAD...

I'll look into increasing the buffer size. Thanks Damon!

what I've always done is burn all of my shns/flacs as data discs and then I store them in a huge cd binder...

what this means for practical purposes is that I rarely listen to any of them, some have never been listened to.

When I'm sitting in the sweetspot and I'm in the mood to listen to something I'm much more keen on just grabbing a DAT off of the racks and throwing it on than getting out a data disk and burning a cd.

so if I can just load them all up on a few hd's I'm all good....

my thoughts EXACTLY.........a 120 gig HD can be had for 120 or less, also...thats a lot of 16/48 flacs/shns..... :o ;) :D 8)

I've also got a Zoltrix Nightingale and I'll tell you...the analog out really sounds like crap.  The Nightingale is good as bit perfect digital input/output for very few $.  But that's it.  Another sound card or even a cheap DAC will sound better.

Maybe check out things like this:
KM 184 > V2 > R4
older recording gear: UA-5  / emagic A62 / laptop / JB3 / CSB / AD20 / Sharp MT-90 / Sony MDS-JE510
Playback: Pioneer DV-578 > Lucid DA 9624 >many funny little british boxes > Linn Isobarik PMS

You could grab another soundcard or an inexpensive DAC, both of which would be a great improvement over the Nightingale.

These would be an alternative - I'm sure there are others

thanks David. yeah as a cheap, bit perfect digi card the Zoltrix is great... I'm not too keen on using a mini out for analog playback. Thanks for the links!!
