what is your dream setup
« on: June 17, 2021, 07:08:12 PM »
This is just an open ended question, if money was no object, what would be your dream taper setup? Just for fun!

I would blow it all on mics:

2 x Josephson C617set or Sonodore RCM-402 omni
4 x Schoeps CMC 1 with MK 4, MK 41, MK 21, and MK 8 capsules

My Zoom F6 is all the recorder I need, but if we're going for extravagance, we could go ahead and add a Sound Devices Scorpio. 8)

Schoeps MK all caps > Sound Devices 10T

Agree with the caps.  A plastic NBox platinum.    Since I only run  >:D I am generally happy with the Tascam DR-2D but maybe some options on other recorders like the Nicky C modified A-10 and some larger recorders when navigating security isn't required.

I would get one pair of every polar pattern but from a variety of manufacturers, some DPA, schoeps Neumanns etc. Cover all the bases.  A nice SD deck to run them all into.

I'd get a development team or two together to build the custom mics, recorders, support gear, and playback arrangements I've long envisioned / day-dreamed about, all of which are totally within the range of the possible but are unavailable.  I've mentioned a few of them in other threads over the years.  Too many to list at the moment.  But maybe I'll come back and type too much in another post if I get bored later!

Was the M2D2 not working with your phone? What phone were you using? That device is very much part of my dream setup…

I briefly considered LD mics but it's so much stuff to schlep.
Of course, since cost is no object, I'll hire a union crew to transport, load in, set up, operate, capture, tear down, pack up, and load out, and deliver the files in my preferred format.

I would love to get my hands on some Beyer M160s. A lot of sweet tapes made with those mics!

I do chamber music, so my main signal chain is MSTC64 > SD mixpre6    I can do almost anything with that little setup.
I have mk21s, km184s, and cm4s for spots as needed.
Post in reaper, with fabfilter pro-q, pro-c2, and pro-r, acon deverberate and verberate, altiverb, and inspired inspirata.

You have a very 'measure twice; cut once' setup.  :coolguy:

I am also a lover of Reaper, but the one piece of post software I cannot live without is iZotope RX. The Spectral Denoise and Spectral Repair modules alone are worth the price.

I will probably hold on to my Line Audio and Busman mics, but if we are getting dreamy...

I would run either Milab VM44 links or Microtech Gefell m21 > (insert PFA/nBob stuff, I have very little idea what I would need here) > Line CM3/4 > Sound Devices MixPre6ii.
Mix and match for situations.

Throw a USBPre2 in there for home use.  One in the Y.Sale has me itchy, wishing it was time to pull the trigger.
Open/Closed ~ AT U853 (subc, h, c, o):
Decks ~ MixPre 6ii, A10, M10
Pres ~ 2x Oade mod UA-5 (W+, ACM+)
Also ~ Line Audio CM3/CM4/OM1 : AT3031 : AT831 : DR2D
