Title: powering an mp-2 and modded sbm-1 with AA's ?
Post by: junkbondking on September 15, 2004, 09:44:11 AM
in the interest of going small/low profile (ie no 6 volts) im going to be running an mp-2 and sbm-1 with my jb3 and mg300's....

i am thinking of going with the aa rechargeable route as 8 batteries on a recharge should last me for a good 4-6 hours correct ?  from looking at a couple websites does this look like all i will need ?

http://www.megabatteries.com/item_details.asp?id=10897&cat_id=40

any other suggestions ?  obviously i'll have a few duracells as backup if need be.  but for the most part, this should get the job done ?

thanks.

jbk

I went with 8 AA lenmar 2450's based on recommendations from sleepypedro and marc:

For the charger, I got the maha:

And if you order from them you also get free screwdrivers and flashlight if you add them to the cart before checkout:

Total with shipping - $64.74

2-2200mAh PowerEX Mahas in the mp-2 last me atleast 3 hours with lights off and phantom 48V on

right on sean.... i like the disco lights on the mp-2 tho.  especially at the darker venues like cervantes and the gothic, it almost functions like a warning light to spun folks.

jbk, you might want to check at king soopers -- when I was in the other day, they had energizer 2,xxx mah aa nimh batteries on sale for a real cheap price (can't remember specific on this though) and a charger on sale for a insanely cheap price (under $10?)

Also, if memory serves, some mp2s need to be modded to accept nimh (@ 1.2 volts per cell) rather than 1.5 volt per cell alkalines.

Regardless, I strongly recommend buying enough batteries so you can switch in a fresh set at set-break.  While you can probably squeeze an entire show out of a single set of batteries, much better (imho) to not have to worry 'bout a sub-par charge late in the second set.

Despite my king soopers/everready notes above, have had great experiences with the maha charger and batteries I purchased from thomas distributing.

i think it has to do with the spring on the positive end of the battery compartment terminals...at least that is what sd told me when i had mine modded for rechargeables. it was cheap to do and well worth it, and fwiw, i have been getting 4.5-5hrs with two duracell 2000mah recharg batteries on the mp2, but maybe thats cause i run mine at 15v instead of 48 and with lights on and very little gain used.

the sbm-1 a little less. 3.5 to 4hrs and as my new 2000mah turned into a well circulated set, the sbm-1 battery meter runs on four blips for only a short while then holds at three for another while.

and since both run on 6v you would always rig a d-cell sled which will run your rig for a long time (20hrs+). you can get rechargable d-cells also.

mp-2 > mod sbm-1 is a fine combo
