Which Preamp to Use DPA 4061
« on: April 16, 2008, 10:35:33 AM »
Hi all
A pair of DPA 4061 Black lavaliere microphones (wired together in stereo configuration to 1/8" mini plug) is on the way to my place.
I am wondering which of the followings I should use to tape with Korg MR-1. ??? ???

1) SOUND PROFESSIONALS-SLIMLINE BATTERY MODULE
2) A3 (of OKM)
3) Church Audio CA9100

Any oppinion or suggestion???

Koichi

With the SP bb I wasn't able to properly power the mics. I used the Church pre when I had my DPA's and it worked perfectly. No experience with A3.
Busman Audio BSC1-K1/K2/K3/K4 > HiHo Silver XLR's > Deck TBD

CA-14 (c,o)/MM-HLSC-1 (4.7k mod)/AT853(4.7k mod)(c,o,h,sc)/CAFS (o)/CA-1 (o) > CA-9100 (V. 4.1)/CA-9200/CA-UBB > Sony PCM-D50/Sony PCM-M10

Another recommendation to use the ST/CA-9100 Church pre.  I'm not familiar with the Korg MR-1, but I was never quite able to get decent levels with my 4061's through the line-in of the PCM-M1 (used a coresound bb, sound pro's bb, and a custom prior).

I "think" that A3 won't power properly the DPA. SP or CA preamps are to options to go. My choice, Church Audio.
Actual Gear:

stealth  - AT943 (c,o,sc,h) > ST-9100 > Edirol R09HR/I-River IHP-116(CFMod)
Ultrastealth  - DPA 4061 > ST-9100 > Edirol R09HR/I-River IHP-116(CFMod)
Open - BSC1-K1/K2/K3/K4 > Segue Dogstars > Marantz PMD671 busman t-mod

Playback: PC > M-Audio Fast Track Pro > KRK RP6 actives

What do you mean by properly power? Both units supply 9 volts, as far as I know...
You either record it or it's gone forever.

Another vote for the Church 9100. Great preamp, nice price.

When I bought my DPAs they were stock (microdot connectors), so I moved away from the 9100. Sad that it's so small & easy to carry, and is now sitting on my desk gathering dust. Kinda thinking of getting it converted from mini to microdot to run instead of the MMA6000. Hmmm...

Thanks everyone.   ::) ::) ::)
I thought I should use a Church Audio preamp but I read in some threads that it could be “flavored” and I just wanted to know how other DPA user thinks about using CA9100.

I will use DPA4061>CA9100>MR-1 and Church Audio Card mics>CA9100>D100 next ultra stealth recording mission…….Just in case you are wondering, I just let you know that I happen to have two CA9100s..

Like deadhoarse, I wasn't able to get enough levels when using DPA's>SP BB>M1 (line in). I guess what I really mean is that the 9100 gave me the gain levels I needed.

The 9100 is as flat as a pancake from 20hz to 85khz! It adds flavor like any preamp does but its not in the sense that its not producing a flat frequency response. Its got a nice warm tone. That's what I hear. But that does not mean it lacks anything.. I am not just saying this because I want you to buy one. I just wanted to clarify that the preamp is very accurate.

Hi Chiris I really like your preamp and tend to use it anytime I can from now on.
One last question.  There is a little switch inside CA9100.  Should I turn it "ON" or "OFF" when I use DPA4061s?
I read somewhere that I should turn it "ON" for Ominis.  But given the SPL of DPA4061s, maybe I could turn it "OFF"?
