Title: random (GD) mastering question
Post by: jerryfreak on May 13, 2020, 10:22:46 PM
listening to red rocks box set right now

do they do any NR on these... obviously from reels, but so ridiculously crisp, no audible hiss at all

usually any NR robs you of some high-end, but im sure its come a long way

[edit: ok i heard some reel hiss but only because i heard them cueing up Promised Land and turned it up to utterly obscene levels before the song started]

Yes, multiple methods of noise reduction and gating
I've watched an engineer spend many hours obsessing over three minutes of product.
Professional work is not setting levels and rolling.

Although hiss isn't truly terrible when it passes through tubes.

Listen to Allman Bros. Ludlow Garage, sound is fine, hisses like a lawn sprinkler

Most of all it is genuine.
That hiss was in the air that night, PA had it, amp stacks had it, brains buzzed it, etc.
