Title: m148 or m118? (question answered)
Post by: J.T.L on August 16, 2006, 08:26:35 PM
...it looks like an m148, but when i opened the top I see 6 batteries not 8...

...I searched through the m118 info here and found there might have been m118s in m148 boxes, is this right? Is there a way to tell if its an m118 mod or is the battery count the key to tell? Ive still have to get a charger and new batts, but didnt expect this...

If you've got a voltage meter, you can test the voltage output to verify.  After a full charge a real healthy M148 voltage is 54-56V.  If your battery is a little older it should be closer to 53V.  The M118 only outputs 18v.  See this thread for more info from Doug:

No problem.  Have you had a chance to check it out yet?  Inquiring minds want to know....

It's kind of hard to tell how many batteries are there when Doug duct tapes the shit out of them.  Damn Macgyver he is!

391's don't need 48v, get a voltometer and measure the output.

I thought that doug had etched or written the model in some of these, or at least thats what i've heard...

That's what I'd always thought (and written on a few sources I made with it).

...ok, after a nice conversation with Doug. Its an m118 that has no chance ever being an m148 due to the board voltage exceptance and box layout with the batteries. Its an m118 for life...question answered. Thank ya Sloan, funny Eli telling me "yeah, its an m148"...the boy doesnt know what hes got, gotta love 'em. So what second pair of mics do I have to buy to run this thing?

AKG 460's or JW Mod 460's will work with it.  They can run off of 9 to 48v.
