Optimal way to connect Mixpre-D to Sony PCM M-10
« on: November 23, 2011, 04:08:58 AM »
Hi all, have done many a search to work this out & being new to taping & a technical novice I cannot work out what is the best (cleanest) way to connect my Mixpre-D to my PCM M10.
At the moment I'm using a dual XLR to stereo 3.5mm adapter into the M10's line-in.
Would there be any advantage or audible difference if I just used a 3.5mm male to male from the mixpre's tape out to the M10's line-in? This option would definitely save on space.
I realise the answer is probably pretty obvious, but I'm still kinda feeling my way around & any advice is very much appreciated.
Thank you.

Differential/balanced outputs often means a longer path for the signal to travel. As there are no differential/balanced inputs on the recorder, you can use the unbalanced output. The output should have a low output impedance. The document on the Mixpre-D sais:
Quote
Tape (3.5 mm) Unbalanced, tip-left, ring-right, sleeve-ground, 2.1k ohm output impedance

That is a bit high.... What is the input impedance of the PCM M10? Checked it, no problem but keep the cable short.
Quote
Line Input (Analog) (Stereo Mini Jack) Input impedance: 22k ohms; Minimum input level: 500mV; Rated input level: 2.0V

I use the tape out to line in with no issues on my MixPre.

Thank you both very much, that's reassuring. I've a mini 3.5-3.5 that will be perfect: less cables, smaller footprint.

here are mixpre specs:
Outputs (XLR):
s/n < 0507 - impedance-balanced, 120 ohm output impedance,
s/n >0507 - active-balanced, 120 ohm output impedance

Outputs (Tape):
Unbalanced, tip-left, ring-right, sleeve-ground, 2.4k ohm output impedance
