USB and Mini-Me = Bad
« on: November 07, 2003, 07:43:23 PM »
This is my little rant for the day i guess but it has a happy ending.  I just got into taping a little while ago, have only done 4 or 5 shows with this rig.  ADK TL's > MME > Sony C1VN, running in from usb.  First show jumpers inside the mini-me had to be changed so that show was crap.  Second show i was getting overs all over the place even with the jumper change and playing with the levels. All shows after that same thing could not get a nice sounding show with the levels turned up to where apogee suggests and other people on this board. So i thought it might be a software issue, not the case got the same results.  Have been disappointed with my rig since the beginning and i thought i bought some quality stuff.  After my last show and not being able to get the levels correct i decided to get a vxpocket v2.  Got it yesterday in the mail plugged it in, configured it with sound forge and the digigram control center did a test record from my home system and everything is working perfect.  Clips are gone and i can finally contol the levels and get a good recording.  Can't wait to see my results after rusted root.  I am now a happy tapper.  Bottom line mme w/ usb into a sony c1vn with sound forge or n-track is not a good thing.

Thanks again to everyone that has ever helped me out on this board

I'd bet m,y bottom dollar that the problem was the computer and its configuration and not the mini-me.  Mine works at 24/48 all the time  over usb!

if you can tell me how to fix it that would be cool but it's kicking ass now with the vxpocket.  I have asked about this before and other people have said it was the computer but no fix for it yet.

I've had no issues at all with running 24/48 via the usb on the minime. Sounds like you have it working for you now.So I won't add anything more. But out of curiosity, did you set the jumpers yourself? Perhaps they were still set to high. Just a thought.

yes i did change them myself, but you can only move them one way or the other.  I would like to figure out what was wrong but it's working great with the vxpocket

i believe it to be a problem with the usb chipset and throughput of the vaio picturebooks (particularly c1vn and c1vpk in my experience).
i have no data to back this up as i don't know how i would run a test on it, but i had problems getting my usbpre to go 24/48 over usb on a c1vn and could not get a fw410 to do 24bit and certainly not reliable multitracking on a c1vpk.
the usbpre works perfectly on my full sized vaio at 24/48.  i can't really comment on the fw410 as it was not mine and didn't have enough time to test it.
i believe due to the tiny form factor of the picturebooks as well as the relative novelty of usb at the time of their release to the marketplace, the bus throughput and chipset compatibility of the usb architecture isn't up to par with the devices being made today.  i think that's what was causing your problem.  i've tried and tried to get this to work but i can only spend so much time being a geek.
anyways, that said, there are plenty of success stories out there with people using pcmcia devices with their picturebooks and i think you are going the right route....vx pocket or any rme digi- or multi-set would also work well.
by the way, does the minime output 24bit over coax or is that only on the usb bus?

I run MME -> c1vn via usb and haven't had any issues like what you and others have spoke of.  I suspect you just need to do more tweaking to get it to work flawlessy.  That said, I do plan on getting a VX pocket one of these days, anyway, so if you're already there screw the USB and just enjoy your rig.
