anyone tried the MS Technique?  I'm thinking of trying that out at DMB Gorge.

What mics are you planning on using for that?

M/S is typically a card for Mid, and a figure-of-8 for Side.  Does Studio Projects make a figure-of-8 capsule for the C4s?

The more I use omni's, the more I like them. I have run them split and about 8 inches apart, either way great tapes....natrual, deep smooth bass, sounds just like you are there.

Either way I probably won't seed my source.

Be proud of the rig you run...who knows, your source might be the best to circulate. You never know. The Schoeps tree might collapse, the Neumann taper might have his batteries die, and the DPA guy might have a tape misload....hell, you might be the only taper to get a complete show. Don't underestimate what Oktavas or any mics are capable of...

Well, what I meant by that is that I'm going to let the big boys seed thier sources. If mine sounds nearly as good, the same, or better, I'll seed it.

So, it looks like I'll run the onmi's split. Now exactly how far do I split them.

Definitely use two stands if you can. The wider apart they are from each other, the wider stereo image you'll get.

now a lot of tapers have split omnis in the past as far as 15',20', hell....even 30'.  however you must take into account of all the phase issues you are going to have the wider they are apart.  especially with giant outdoor PA stacks and being that far away.  with this in mind i would never split them more than 6' unless i had no other choice due to how the section is set up.

now i think the closer you get to the sound source, ie. waaayyy FOB you might be able to get away with a wider spread depending upon where you are at and how far the PA stacks are apart from each other.

15' of cable is enough to get a decent spread of around 2 or 3 feet. then again it depends upon how high the stands are being run.  if you got the hypers i'd go for hypers DIN or PAS.  hypers are the money cap for teh oktavas IMHO.

not sure about omni's xy.  i would never try it but i can't come up with the words on why i wouldn't.  i think i wouldn't because the point of xy why is to really focus on the sound sorce or to naturally roll off bass or both. i think using omnis with this pattern wouldn't accomplish those two things.  just thought..... any other thoughts from peeps on why xy omnis would not be ideal?

edit: for spelling
