Best and Smallest power for Schoeps?
« on: March 23, 2006, 10:55:16 AM »
I've been reading through all the threads about Schoeps and powering options on here.  I'm looking to upgrade from DPA 4061's to some Schoeps.  So from what I understand about the Schoeps the most common caps are MK4's for taping shows.  But to power them I need 48v.  I only Stealth so I need a compact setup.  Looks like I'd be going MK4>KCY 250>?.  I'd defintely want to use the KCY 250 because of the small size.  So which pre/battery box is The absolute smallest one on the market to power these mics with the KCY 250 and no mic bodies?
Is there a certain site that people go to for Schoeps mics?  Where's the best place to get them from?

you may want to try the nbox, it comes with its own custom cables...all you'd need to buy would be the caps.

just another option.

Because nothing says "I have lots of money and am sort of confused as to how to spend it" like Bose.

probably.  phantom power AND 20db fixed gain in a box approx. 4"W x 4"L x 2"H.

The smallest option is probably a Denecke PS-2 for phantom power + a pair of line transformers for gain (but this option won't work with the KCY cable unless you get an adapter cable to run XLR from the PS-2 to the 5-pin binder on the KCY cable).  NBox is next in line.  Then the Lemosax (Sonosax SX-M2/LS2).  They're all *very* stealthable and you should select whichever option fits your budget and sounds best to your ears.

Wouldn't CCM4>PS2>recorder be the smallest option? That would eliminate the need for bodies or a Sax/NBox. No idea how this would sound though.

CCMs into a microtracker would be about the smallest Schoeps rig that could be done.  Obviously you lose the flexibility of the switchable caps, and use the Microtracker's nonstandard but supposedly functional phantom power.

been stealthing w/ the 722, cmc6/kc5/mk's....

wondering if the microtracker is stable enough, and how long it'll last when providing phantom. its a lot smaller than 722, and would be real easy to sneak in the MT/cables/mics

Microphones:
CCM4v (pair)
mk6 (pair) and mk41 (pair) with kc5's & cmc6's
mk21 (1) for those M/S situations

i don't think the internal battery in the Microtracker would last very long powering schoeps.  probably 1 hr, may 1.5 hours...

Get yourself the Schoeps pre-amp, that works with any active setup.

VMS05 or the older vms02ib.

Pricey, but they are designed for exactly the purpose you stated.
