converting dats to shn and flac.
« on: November 29, 2003, 11:52:02 AM »
I am going to try and convert one of my tapes to shn or flac in the very near future. I am wondering what kind of cable i need to connect my DA-20MKII to my turtle beach digi sound card? Also what software will i need to convert to shn and flac?

any help would be appreciated.

It depends on the capabilities of your soundcard and DAT deck.  Do they both support coax/RCA digital input?  Or optical?  Your documentation for each device should tell you if they support the same digital format.  If the same, this'll be easy.  If different, it'll require a bit more gear, but will still be easy.

For more info on FLAC and SHN.  I use Mike Wren's FLAC Front End installer for Windows.

don't use analog!  use a s/pdif coaxial digital cable to go from da-20 to the sound card

if your card doesnt have any digital ins, you gots ta upgrade, i have NO clue how dat>analog 1/4>soundcard>pc would sound, im sure if it has good amps, you might do it, but i doubt HIGHLY the turtle card has desirable amps, prolly LOTS of distortion... :P

do you guys have any recomendations on a pretty affordable sound card. something under $250 would be fine by me.

this is over the $250 mark but how is the Tascam PCI-822 card?

in the Coputer Recording Forum I made a thread titled "soundcards" and I listed a few sound cards that are both bit-perfect and under $200

Audiophile 2496.  Thats what I have, costs $150 and works damn well.  Then i use wavlab 4.0 as the software to record.  Just hook a coax from your tascam to the digi in on the card, and then I have RCA cables coming out of the soundcard into my reciever for playback to listen to what im recording.

Here is the link to Wiki.Etree.org's Seeding Guidelines...

http://wiki.etree.org/index.php?page=SeedingGuidelines

This may be the best place to find out stuff like DAT>WAV transfers...

As for WAV>SHN/FLAC - Use MKW or Wren's FLAC Frontend...  Both found also at wiki.etree for DL.  Both are easy...

The Delta Dio 2496 is perfect.  Going rca out>1/8" defeats the whole purpose of digital, you just added an analog generation.

But the DD2496 is good, should be able to go digi out into it and your computer.  At this point, I'm not sure, but some folks I know use Samplitude as it goes 48>44 on the fly...  But I think CDWave and SoundForge both will record your DAT as a WAV.

Once that is done, cut tracks with CDWave (remember to cut the first few seconds off the front AND back to  get nice clean edges free of SBEs - sector boundary errors).

Then drop your new tracks into MKW or FLAC FE and viola!  Write up a text, and send us copies!
