Best mics (or caps) for outdoor festival i.e. Bonnaroo
« on: February 16, 2004, 10:19:44 PM »
Just wondering if I should keep my eyes open for some deals on some outdoor festival mics...seeing as how it will not be too long before it happens.   I am currently the owner of ADK sc-t's .   I havent even ran these yet.  I just wanna make sure I have the right mics for outdoors.

what about windscreens?

right now all i have is the really cheap small pair that came with my superlux mics.  i've never used them cuz i never tape anything where i have needed them.  but now i'm getting worried.  will they work ok, or should i invest in something better.  i don't want to drop a lot of money on these tho, since i'll probably never use them much.

ok its worth spending the money on really nice screens- you will use them a lot more than you think.  in fact mics should ALWAYS be used with windscreens, even indoors.  There are a few exceptions, but they are all studio based- not live recording based.  Think about it- you've got smoke in venues, air conditioning, fans, and the possability of your mics getting knocked to the ground-- all things that windscreens can possibly save you from.  Especially smoke- windscreens will save your mics from smoke better than just about anything other than not bringing them into bars and clubs.

good point about windscreens, but I still don't use them 90% of the time if I'm indoors.  I'll learn my lesson eventually.  :P

good points, well then i'll say this, i still don't really want to spend a lot of money on these because soooner than later i want to get better mics and i don't think the windscreens that will work on these will work on the ones (neumann skm140's) i want to get.  maybe i'll just head to the local stores and see what i can find for cheap, unless any of you have any ideas?

one nice thing about taping Boulder... no smoking in the whole city, and soon it will be the same in Denver!

Same is here in new York, no smoking anywhere. I don't run windscreens though,  don't even have any. Anyone here had any experience with the small ones from Olsen Audio or should I invest in DPA ones for like $40?

i knew i moved away from nyc for a reason.... :smoking2:

The no smoking thing isnt just in the City anymore.  I live south of Buffalo and it is a state-wide law that bans smoking. NYC started it in March and the rest of the state followed in July. Damn cold outside for us smokers. Should be a reason to quit, but now they are trying to reverse the law.
I dont smoke around my gear though. I try to at least keep a safe distance, especially when I was a patcher.
