The JB3, The Heat, and the ROO...
« on: June 03, 2004, 08:12:47 PM »
I've heard anecdotal reports of JB3s overheating and shutting down.  Not usually from a reliably competent source.  Since tech wise we here seem to have a better understanding of our gear, I figured I'd ask you guys if this has ever been an issue at outdoor fests.

peace, chris

I had it happen to me once.  I was on a road trip and the jb3 was on the seat next to me in the sun.  It all of a sudden shut down.  I was able to turn it back on, then I just covered it up and all was fine.

I'm kinda having the same concerns, Chris.  I always carry two small portable umbrellas with me for festivals and outdoor taping.  One to clamp to the stand, obviously.  The other I open up and place above my gear to put it in the shade and protect it from the direct sunlight.  I'm guessing this'll be enough to keep the NJB3 and the rest of my gear from getting too piping hot.  We'll see...

good call....I've got one stand umbrella, getting a second to cover the gear sounds like a plan.

Mine overheated and shut down when stealthing inside a packed and hot bar. Missed the last 2 minutes of the show due to that. The recorder was inside my bag when recording. Nowadays I keep it open. Haven't happened since.

take the battery cover off the JB3 so there is a little more airflow, bring a thick white towel to cover it if you have no shade.  As long as it can breathe a little and is not in direct sunlight you should be OK.

I am buying a second JB3 for festivals where it is hot and I want to tape almost every act...this way I can alternate JB3 and allow one to cool while using the other one.

Why not just make a little fan for it or something?   Like computers have to cool them off, same sorta thing.

or go to wal-mart or something similar, and just get a small portable fan, inbetween sets or something, let it run on the jb3 ;)

i had my jb3 shut down on my once so far.  left it in my car while i was at work and on my ride home it died on me.  let it cool down a bit and it worked fine after that.  id be a little nervous running it at a festival, but if u keep it covered by a white towel so it stays out of the sunlight i'd think you'd be okay.

Mine shut down just last Sunday. I had it covered up, in the shade, but it was under a rather thick moving blanket. Around an hour and ten minutes into the the set, I checked the JB3 and it was dead.  >:(. I immediately pulled it out and set it in the open, and it ran fine for the remainder of the day. I have since tested it in the open and tucked into a padded camera bag....I'd recommend keeping it in the open (and shaded) as much as you can. I'm not surprised this is happening. Looks like a guy should run DAT as a back up to the JB3.... :)

seems they can only take about 1 hr or so of heat and they shut down!

Yep. The moral of this story is "Keep your JB3 where it can breathe free"
