What recorder shound I buy?
« on: August 07, 2004, 08:36:19 AM »
Hello, I´m new at this board, so please welcome me!

My old R90 MD is about to die and I need a new recorder.

I like the concept of the new Hi MDs, but I do not like the fact that SONY are making it hard for their customers upload a writable WAV.

The iRiver 120 looks good, but i do not like the fact that iRiver are using their customers as beta testers. People are complaining about glitches, filelimits, lack of record meter etc.

The Creative JB3 seems to be a good choice, but now I have some things to clear out:

My Sony R90 MD was used together with a simple, home soldered 9V battery box and a pair of Panasonic WM60 binaural capsules hidden in an old pairs of ear buds for maximum stealth abilities, I just hang the mics at my chest and nobody is expecting anything strange. Even if this is a pretty chep setup the sound is very good.

When taping with the above equipment I plugged the battery box into the mic in and sat the levels to 8-9 of 30 to get a good volume at a normal (pretty high) rock concert. I have never tried the line in at a concert, but in front of my stereo I had to push the line in meter to the bottom (30 of 30) to get the same volume as 9 of 30 at the mic in.

Now to the questions:

Will my mics/battery box work fine with a JB3?
Can I get a proper rec volume or will the volume be to low?
Does the JB3 support mic in recordings?

Are there any other good choise for me?

The JB3 seems fine, but it is a little big as I want to use it as a "walking around"-player also!

Thanks in advance,

Olof

1] get those mics up high!
2] the JB3 should work, although the line-in jack can be picky about what plugs will work with it
3] go DAT

its say jb3 also if you want to go line in, but if you want a go mic in, i
would go with a d100/m1 or d8 if the budget is lower, this would
be your best bet i think, just my .02

I´m still thinking of a Hi-MD. I like the pocketfriendly size and I have also read at minidisc.org that you actually can upload waves via the USB (real time). The JB3 will not fit in my pockets and thats a major disadvantage when I want to use the device for daily playback.

if I can fit a SD MP-2 in the back pocket of my jeans, you can fit a JB3 back there

You can only upload WAVs via USB if they were recorded analog in. Anything recorded via digital in can't be sent out through the USB, from what I understand.

I can cram my jb3 into my jeans FRONT pocket.  Getting it out is another story...  but possible.

jb3 rules...  go for it...

although the hi-MD has promise for a "low end" deck...  especially if you plan on using it as a mp3 player...  jogging with a jb3 would be nearly impossible.

Can you record live show with the Neuros digital audio devise?  Reason I ask cause, I'm running C4>WmodUA-5>D8  and wanted to modernize ya can say with a digital recorder that I dont have to do anything but plug and burn to CD.  As a newbie to taping, but proficient with computers, it seams to me that the whole process of taking the digital signal through a sound editing program is way to complicated.  Setting tracks and changing file types.  Its all a real pain in the ass!  .02    Looking for an easy way other than

Other than:
D8>WmodUA-5>usb>computer

Looking for a device>usb>computer>CD.............or .........device>CD
