Actually, you did a very good job of setting levels in the original recording. Your peaks are at about -3.5 dBFS which is just about perfect, depending on the recorder.
As for the bass level, that is completely subjective. The tonal balance depends on your speakers and your room and your preference. Do what sounds good to you and be done with it. I agree there is too much bass, so I tried a HPF 6 dB/octave @100 Hz, and it sounded OK to me. YMMV.
After the HPF, the peaks were at -6.5 dBFS so I’d Amplify the whole song by 6 dB.
I am using Audacity v1.3.11 for these edits.
This recording is nearly mono. What was your mic setup?
