Youtube Mono playback problem - camcorder + CA14 + CA 9000
« on: August 13, 2014, 06:26:19 AM »
Hi Tapers,

I have a minor problem. I'm not very well versed in the technical side of recordings so please bear with me, i might not use the correct lingo but i hope you understand.

So i have been videotaping concerts for a while now. Upgraded over the years from a flipcam to a camcorder to a camcorder with external mics and a pre-amp. I'm not out to get perfect recordings but it is nice to have decent one. For that i upgraded my panasonic HDC-SD90 a little over a year ago with Church Audio CA14 mics and a Church Audio 9000 pre-amp.

You could say i record semi-stealth, get the mics out and point and shoot with the camera. With as little hassle as possible. The audio upgrade works great, at least to my ears. It's not always perfect but that's fine to me. I upload my videos to youtube and sometimes i do some minor edits in FCPX. You can find my youtube channel at https://www.youtube.com/user/kkpgijsbers

Up untill about october last year everything was fine. My videos could be played on desktop and mobile and there was sound. As an example: The Twilight Sad: http://youtu.be/T6VZceJdQ1s

Then around october something changed. I didn't change anything in my recording set-up but from that time on my videos played well on desktop and mobile but the sound was gone on mono-output devices. So when played, for instance on a smartphone, over the speakers: no sound. But when you plug in a stereo headphone there is sound. As an example: Wardruna: http://youtu.be/IVjDkvVleR0

What i think is happening, in n00b language, is that when Left and Right channel are pushed through a mono speaker/output, L and R cancel each other out. Sometimes you can hear some low-volume rumbling. When played in stereo all is fine.

The odd thing is i didn't change anything in my set-up so i expect youtube might have changed something in the way they proces videos. Or, i did change something without knowing. I don't really have a clue what's going on.
I was hoping you more technical tapers might be able to shed some light on this and maybe point me in a direction where i could maybe find a solution.

I don't really like post-production and if a lot of it was needed to get these videos to play well on mono devices i might settle for the way it is now. But maybe there's an easy solution of which i didn't know.

Thanks a lot in advance. Please let me know if you need additional information.
