Can we omit ‘rated speed’ seems like a lot of people will quote burst speeds which are often arbitrary speeds the card manufacturer claims. For our purposes class is more useful as it’s indicative of minimum sequential write

Class 10, U1= 10 MB/s
U3, V30 = 30 MB/s
etc

Unless you want to use it as a descriptive identifier for the card- ‘Lexar 2000x’ , ‘Sandisk extreme plus 150 MB/s’ etc

Also model number and if known, country of origin may be useful. I have two sandisk cards purchased recently, one was made in China and is ‘extreme’ and is pn SDSDX-V5..... The other is made in Taiwan and is ’extreme plus’ pn SDSDX-W5. Despite one being labeled plus every rating on them are identical.

Also should we list test duration? I’ve had some tests go for over four hours and then crap out

There seem to be more fake cards than real ones nowadays.

for sure. first thing i do with any card is write it front to back with h2testw to make sure it has full speed *and* capacity. unscrupulous sellers have found ways in teh past to make card capacity look larger than the actual writable area (like sell you a "128GB" card thats really only 32GB)

apart from that, not only are there fakes, there is malware in some cards. check out this dated, but fascinating, article.

im still looking for the old-school disk benchmark software that would write and graph a disk across its whole surface (premise being inner and outer transfer rates on spinning disks are vastly different)... but i feel this could be useful on making sure a card can write to full speed all the way up to the point of full

general notes: first card I tested that could sustain the mixpre6's max write rate. Actually bought this little guy for my Roland R-07 which is limited to 32GB SDHC but its the best so far. Will check into larger sizes in the PRO series (edit: none of the following cards worked with 3.03, 64gb pro micro, 128gb pro micro, 64gb pro (full size), 128gb (full size), perhaps 32GB SDHCs are most stable)

I got a new USB3 UHS-II compliant card reader as all of the card measurements i was taking with my older Toshiba Portege's built-in PCI SD card reader ("Ricoh PCIe SDXC/MMC Host Controller") seemed to top out around 40MB/sec write and 60 MB/sec read

I still have some of the cards tested above, will rerun. where you see "Lexar SR2" in test note, thats the reader im using.

I have a slew of these Portege R83x/R93x laptops for home and work use (like my audio gear, im a brand loyalist and have been using toshiba for 2 decades). cards at home that were running 40/60 do 50/70 on what i believe is the same PCI-e controller and driver, will investigate

ive also seen differences of 10% on the Lexar SR2 depending on the USB3 controller and driver to which i connect it

Point being, i suppose, is there are vast differences in how different hardware and software installations handle the same card (which is the point of this thread, i suppose)

Result: FAILED:Record Buffer Error after 2h02m, and subsequently after 31 mins, 14 mins, 24 mins, 14 mins, 11 mins, 6 mins...aborted test and ran h2testw on remaining space on card. it wrote the rest of the card out at 66.4 MB/sec

Test #3 - firmware 2.21, quick formatted on mix pre
Result: FAILED:"SD Warning - media is too slow" error after 2 minutes and subsequently after 66 min, and 56 min, test aborted

Test #4 - firmware 2.21, immediately after test #3, reduced bitrate to 6 channels at 24/96
Result: FAILED:"SD Warning - media is too slow" error after about 7 hours (card capacity 20 hrs in this case). Rest of recording sesh was a disaster, was only able to record 30+ minutes before failing 2 out of 15 times (file 487 and 488 were an auto-split), and those two longer tests also failed after 65 and 38 mionutes respectively. There is something about writing past 40% on cards that it doesnt seem to like

yes it seems most tests ive done on 3.03 fail after 1 hour, smaller cards have an advantage (the lone one i qualified was a 32GB)

i just downgraded to 2.21 and will be updating the test reports above as testing occurs (update: 2.21 appeared to be worse than 3.03)

same so far. The one card i had that worked on 3.03 also works on 4.01. Every card that failed on 3.03 that i tested again (so far) on 4.01 also failed. Seems to be a lot of initial failures around the 2h30min- 2h40m range, then a ton of failures at less than 1h intervals after that . this would be at about the 35-40GB mark on the card. (obv the 32GB cards that are working for us never get there)

It doesnt appear that 4.01 actually solves the problem. Can you retest the Integral card on 4.01?

I’ve found that cards that perform poor on random writes will get hit with buffer error failures.

Running tests with CPDT on freshly formatted cards shown that cards with random writes around 1MB/s will fail in MixPre-6 within a few seconds only when running 8 channels in 24bit at 192kHz. Even if the cards do manages to write 30-40MB/s sequentially.

When cards reaches 3.5MB/s* at random writes they appear to be stable for 8ch recordings.
Some cards with random write in between 2-3.5 MB/s seems to be more down to for how long you record and some shear luck.

while i no longer have my mixpre, i did some benchmarks on this. Anybody in the USA want to volunteer to test this card, we can pass it around

would be best if testers can commit to doing a minimum of two full write cycles at 8 channels of 24/192 (7.5 hrs per test). And even better if some people with the mixpre-ii or mixpre10 can test at even higher bitrates/hannel count
