How are you guys storing your gear?
« on: August 12, 2024, 02:35:53 AM »
I'm looking for inspiration to store my gear in a tidy and managed way.
I've got 3 different recorders, about 4 sets of stealth mics, battery box, batteries, cards etc. I'm looking for a more protected and organised way of storing my stuff, rather than dumping it in a big box.

You don't have to store it if you're using it often. ;)

the nagra is under the coffee table, the sonosax recorder and pre are in the stadium clear bag, the pr2 is loaned out, the tall mic stand with both pairs of DPAs is set up in the kitchen, the CM4s and the NoHype SRM1 are on top of the coffee table, and the batteries are plugged in all over the house charging.

When my wife gets back in town, that will all be different, of course

You can get cheap carrying cases at most hardware/sporting good stores.  I found a 10x12 case that I filled with foam and made cut outs for the small stuff like battery boxes, caps, small leads, adapters etc.  I also use various smaller Pelican cases like a 1050 or 1060 as they fix nicely in a camera bag.  I have some foam cut outs for these as well to carry smaller decks, mics and batteries without them rolling around.  One side of my desk opens up like a door and I just stack everything in there.

^I'll add: it also helps if you're lazy about changing out gear; or if you're just lazy in general.

I keep most of my gear in a set of small drawers that sits on a desk, though my most frequently used gear (A10, mics, battery box) usually never makes it out of the small bag (formerly a portable CD player carrying case) that it travels with me to shows in.

I bought this when I added more equipment, it says "womens", but it's basically a unisex backpack, with multiple pockets with zippers and lots of space in a compact bag. For me it fits: Tascam DR-60, Tascam DR-70,4 XLR Cables, 2 portable battery bricks, battery case, microphone case, 2 portable recorders (Zoom H2, Tascam DR-03), two 2 pound weighted straps, 2 mini tripods, a cell phone mount to clamp to my stand, as well as various other stuff (pen, markers, SD cards, etc.).

I tend to use Pelicans/clones for most stuff, for safe weatherproof transport. At home, supplemented with storage tubs.

Whatever you use, be sure to check all soft foam regularly for rot. This includes mic boxes and windscreens as well as Pelican cases.

I keep my actively used gear on this shelf unit

top shelf in use is for my bags

next shelf (L>R)
mics in their storage tubes inside padded bags and actives in padded bags inside Orca hard case
recorders, preamps and NBoxes stacked in milk crate
windscreens in top tub and Rycotes and SRS mounts in plastic box underneath

bottom shelf (L>R)
cables and other odds and ends in first crate
batteries in small crate in center
clamps, small extension pole and other items that I don't really use in basket

I also have a large tub on another shelf unit with empty boxes
and a smaller tub with other gear I am NOT currently using but will eventually get around to

Ive got a few bits of gear, but the SP-CMC-2A Mics and the SP-SPSB-6 Battery Box are in the bag they came shipped in to keep them safe.
The Roland R-05 finds itself sat on my desk with both my Panasonic HC-V700 and Canon SX710 HS
The Sony ECM-719 is in the box it came shipped in, but with its manual and the AT9400 and Sony ECM-929LT are ontop of 2 Lego Vehicles (VW Transporter 1 and VW Beetle (both awesome sets! :) )

I used flash on the photo of the 929LT and the AT9400 as they are in a shelf that's pretty deep.

Microphones: Sony ECM-929LT / Sony ECM-719 / AT9400 / [b\] SP-CMC-2A + SP-SPSB-6 (both from 2004) [b/]

Recorders: Samsung A21 (not used anymore) / Motorola G50  / [b\] Roland R-05 [b/]

Cameras: Canon SX710HS / Panasonic HC-V700

From: Cornwall, England (where there aren't many gigs, but definitely a few, planning on taping a lot)

Been taping since November 26th 2021, and trading since late August 2020.
Spreadsheet of bootlegs (also a tab of shows I have attended/taped) :

Primary rig lives in Amazon basics photo backpack, ready to grab.

Rest lives in smallish Sterlite chest of drawers like this: https://www.amazon.com/STERILITE-20758004-Clearview-Desktop-Storage/dp/B009YMVX1A?source=ps-sl-shoppingads-lpcontext&ref_=fplfs&smid=A3L274K3JIT2S2&th=1

Used to use shelves, but dust is a factor.

Stands in bags in the corner near umbrella tree.
MK41s, MK22s; Vanguard V1s matched pair
Schoeps kcy5, nbob actives
Naiant PFA 60v, PFA 48v, IPA
Sound Devices MP-6II; Sony PCM-A10

I keep my gear in a big box...high up on a shelf which should keep my little sons hands off it ;-)
I also store some old gear at my parents place.

Probably be better to have all the gear at the same place, but so far this is what I have done.
Soundprofessionals Audio Technica AT 943 (SP-CMC-8) External Stereo Microphones > SP-SPSB-10-80020
Sound Professionals Micro-mini microphone power supply with mini 12vdc battery and 24 inch hardwired output cable Soundprofessionals Batterybox >> Olympus Ls-10 Linear Recorder > 4 GB > 24 Bit / 48 Khz  > 24 Bit / 96 Khz

Zoom Q3 HD - 1080p / 96-24 Bit

Roland R-26 (96 / 24 Bit)

Sony PCM-D100 (192 / 24 Bit)

main storage for everything is a large padded camera bag with dividers (Think Tank airport series, the largest non-wheeled one).  Inside each section gear is in little clamshell cases or boxes or bags with silica packs, depending on what it is, and since I always put things in the same place it gets easier and easier to grab the right recorder, batteries, cables, capsules, stealth props, etc. fairly quickly.

Then for air travel all necessary items for a particular event or series go into a smaller padded carry-on camera bag with dividers along with various photo and tech items.

I keep my main rig in my clear taping bag, so it's ready to go anytime. All my extra gear I have in a tote with extra photo equipment. Harbor Freight sells cases that are Pelican knockoffs that are pretty damn good. Dunno if I'd trust them to be waterproof, but for storing stuff on a shelf, they're great.
