Custom XLR cables
« on: October 21, 2024, 05:30:18 PM »
I'm in search of a pair of custom chopped straight XLR cables.
Approx. length 100-120cm.
Could anyone point me in the direction of someone making these. Either in Europe or someone willing to send to Europe (Sweden).

Thanks for your help.

Thanks for your reply. I've already contacted him but got a short reply that he doesn't ship international.

  • "Kortwich Filmtontechnik" in Berlin/Germany: https://www.shop-ftt.de/de/kortwich-produkte/kortwich-winkel (not cheap but they will build custom cables)
  • "Design a Cable" in the UK: https://www.designacable.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=low+profile+xlr (I had custom built multicore cables manufactured by them)
  • Ali-Express: Search for "Cyclone XLR 3-Pin Male To Low-Key XLR 3-Pin Female Audio Cable Sound Device" or equivalent low profile cables from SZJELEN. Sometimes they have "Welcome deals" where the first one or two items are marked down in price. (So cheap that you couldn't build them by yourself.) Double-check they actually use chopped Neutrik connectors. (Mine were Neutrik and well made.)
  • Possibly some other companies like Canford or Pinknoise in the UK

I have had excellent luck with Performance Audio. No affiliation, but they have done excellent custom work for me (and I am fussy). They ship internationally.

That said, I am surprised you can't find someone closer to make them over there.

Or just learn to make your own. Someone here told me to years ago and said really anyone could do it. I gave it a try and now I agree. I now make lots of custom cables with custom chops, etc. It's not difficult and you can buy all the tools and materials you need to make lots for the cost of your first "made by others" cable order.

Yes -- they are excellent. I buy a lot of parts from them to make my own cables, and their prices are the best I have found on stuff like thin Mogami wires we like for stealth. They also have made me some beautifully made customs. Better quality work by a good margin than other custom places I have used (haven't tried the people recommended above though).

No affiliation, just happy customer.

How about making them yourself?  Cable Techniques makes the below connectors.  I've made a bunch of cables using these connectors and have been very satisfied with the results.  My 2 cents.

I build most of my cables. Just made 4 channel 100' xlr snake. It's a fun addition to the hobby.

But/and, many folks don't find cable construction fun, or simply cannot because of visual or motor barriers.

How about we don't judge methods?
MK41s, MK22s; Vanguard V1s matched pair
Schoeps kcy5, nbob actives
Naiant PFA 60v, PFA 48v, IPA
Sound Devices MP-6II; Sony PCM-A10

I am pretty sure op found a solution in the last four months, but what do you mean by judge?

Building cables is a pita, but it is simple. He never said anything about his ability, or even unwillingness.

I need to wear a visor to solder through hole components, but can still solder tiny surface mount ones. I do not need the visor for cables, although I still put it on. Motor skills? Seriously, if you can hit the toilet, you should be capable enough to solder a cable.

60/40 Rosin Core Solder
Variable temperature soldering iron
Small vise
Read the directions, watch the Youtubes twice

Do Not Forget
to put the bushing, grommets, shell, heat-shrink, or whatever on the cable first (and in correct orientation)

It's a life skill for an audio guy.

I do not get anything from the "Big River" links attached, they are open descriptives and there as examples.
Do not burn self or set your house on with the hot iron.
Do not breath smoke from solder, it has a bit of lead

If legitimately challenged with motor-skills, I would have done it for you, however, I no longer have a working shop.
These flea ("Hamfests") markets and conventions searchable at link below are great places to find old electronics and old electronics engineers and technicians.
There almost always is someone making antenna and audio cables:
