Mic Comp: Nevaton MC49 vs. DPA 2012
« on: October 28, 2024, 12:31:51 PM »
Hey all, just recently purchased a pair of the DPA 2012. I wanted to share this because these are both mics without too much out there to listen to for comps sake. I ran my Nevaton MC49 (cardioid) and the DPA 2012 together this weekend for Dogs in a Pile at Brooklyn Bowl, Philly. I'm interested in everyone's take on the comp between the two. They were run as closely together as possible. Both DIN, straight into the Sonosax SX-R4. Both the same height on the stand but the DPAs were about 6 inches closer to the source. Gain on the SX-R4 was as close to the same as I could eyeball. And both were EQ'd and normalized in Post the exact same. Let me know which source sounds "best" to you. This folder should be open to anyone to grab and listen.

I'll post the sources after I get a few thoughts on how each sounds and which you prefer and why.

edit: per the comments below I added two new files that have just been normalized, no eq to level the playing field just a bit

^^ Nice! But consider posting the pre-EQ samples that are just loudness-matched? Maybe I'm the only one, but I'm suspicious of comparing EQ'ed samples, even if you ran both through the same EQ, as it's hard to know how that affected them or whether it benefited one more (i.e. if one really needed the EQ...)

Ok two new files that have not been eq'd have been added above. files named sourcex.normalized are normalized but not eq'd.

I'm guessing that source 1 is the DPA and source 2 is the Nevaton.

Your comparison is appreciated, but it is definately a hard charging excerpt.  Any chance you can do another with a clip that is a little more slow and melodic?  Thanks

I agree with the others that Source 1 is the DPA. Source 1 sounds cleaner to my ears than Source 2.

I've also added the raw sources from both for the whole show as well in the original folder.

You're really gonna like 2012 > V2 (I do atleast)

I ran it on Friday for a reunion show by The Bogmen, and the results were great.
