Pitch Correction
« on: December 19, 2024, 11:18:59 AM »
Is there any detailed how-to's on pitch correcting?  I have a few tapes that run slow that I would like to adjust. I can use either Audacity, Audition or Izotope ... which ever would give me the best results.
Mics: Lewitt LCT-040; Naiant X-X Omni's; Audio Technica U853AW's; Sony ECM-166BMP's; Audio Technica AT-853's.
Cables: Gotham GAC-4/1 Cables; Canare Custom Cables, UniStar LilRed Whip.
Recorders: Tascam DR-100mkIII; Tascam DR-05x, Tascam PortaCapture X8, Sony PCM-A10.
Misc: Samsung EVO Plus 128GB SDXC Cards.
RayoVac Fusion Batteries.

Do you want to correct tape speed, pitch or both? Reaper (unlimited shareware), Samplitude and many other DAWs come with ZPlane's élastique Pro algorithm. Check out https://www.soundonsound.com/techniques/pitch-doctor. I think Audacity uses librubberband instead (at least on Linux).

If you really want to change the pitch of the tune / vocals, you might want to use Melodyne or Synchro Arts RePitch.

It's very easy to change just speed, or speed and pitch, in WavePad, including in the free version.  However, you have to know what percent the speed is off, which is the difficult part.  It is also far more difficult if the speed changes throughout the recording, meaning you may need to adjust each song separately (and even then it won't be perfect).

Thank you. This gives me a jumping-off point. I appreciate it.

A friend of mine is into 78's. He uses Izotope RX (unsure of version #) for this type thing. I do not use it, but he's not on TS so I will tell what he told me:
Apparently there is  module which will analyze the file and adjust the speed with some sort of learning tool which might adjust the first few minutes of a cassette tape digi file at a different speed adjustment than the end of the tape (for example)
This speaks to what robgronette mentioned.
music IS love

When you get confused, listen to the music play!

Thank you. I am flipping through the online Izotope "manual" now. I appreciate the heads-up!
