Title: UA-5 Dumb (but important) question
Post by: lordbelial on February 21, 2006, 02:48:35 AM
My friends,

I've got a stock UA-5 (without digimod yet), and I'd like to know one thing.

A friend of mine is running to a R1 (no optical input), so I was wondering If I could use the UA-5 without digimodding using the rear RCA outputs with an adapter cable ending in a miniplug 1/8 so we could use the UA-5 into the R1 without need of being digimodded?  ???

Just wandering, I know the best thing is to test and try... but I'm now at work and we're getting short of time... XD

Thanks!

AFAIK that will work.  But the UA5 doesn't provide analog pass-through, so you're running through an extra ADC/DAC stage.  Signal path would look like the following:

Mics > UA5 analog-in > ADC > DAC > UA5 analog-out > R1 analog-in > ADC > record to CF

Not ideal due to the extra ADC/DAC stage, but it should work.

Rrobar from team michigan tried running Freelunch's stock UA-5 at the michigan Moe. show.  He started off the night running it into his lappy and backing up to his dat via the analog outs.  For the second set, he shut off the lappy and couldn't get the analog outs to function by themselves without the lappy on.

It may be worth the time to try it at home before you go out taping.

Honestly, I think you'd be alright just running straight to the R1.

ive used my UA-5 in a pinch as an analog pre with no usb connect. it does indeed convert it twice in there, but it works when youre really in need.
