M1 DAT bit rate?
« on: August 04, 2004, 04:53:19 AM »
I just got a v3 yesterday  ;D Going to test it out this weekend or sooner. I learned from the JB3 FAQ that the JB3 will take at most 16bit/48kHz. What about the signal to a M1 ? Can I send a 24bit signal or higher kHz signal to the M1?

My v3 has a TOSlink output making it easy to send to the JB3. What exactly do I need to send a TOSlink output to a M1 DAT? I have a coaxiail to 7pin I've used to clone DAT but I'm not sure if there is an opt>7pin cable available and where to purchase one. I'd rather not get a opt>coaxial converter. Ideally I'd like to record to a JB3 and a M1 as a backup source from my v3. Not sure that is a good idea or how to go about it.

any help is appreciated.

you can only record 16/44.1 & 16/48 on the M1
going v3>m1 optical ,youll need a optical>7pin which i think sony makes or there is an inbetween to convert your spdif 7pin
search around the forum youll see something on v3>?(optical)>DAT
hope this helps

thanks. I'm on the verge of having to get a laptop computer to record 24bit/96.  ::) A whole bunch of questions there for another discussion thread but let me continue to research some more.

doesnt the V3 have multiple digital outputs? (so u dont have to have both devices on the same digi chain)

The V3 has multiple digital outputs, but they all share the same output bit-depth/sample rate.  So they're ALL 16-bit/44.1k or 24/48 or whatever bit-depth/sample rate you choose.  So you can't run 24-bit out AES to laptop and 16-bit out coax to DAT.

m-audio audiophile keeps popping up. I also came across Edirol FA-101 but really know nothing about it. It looks like I can feed about 10 channels and mix it. What I really want to do is that about ten channels from the stage (vocals, bass, guitars, drum mics) record them all separating along with a AUD recording and mix all that stuff at home. So is this just wishful thinking or can I do this with the Edirol FA-101 and the right recording software. I'm hoping this dream can come true.

You'll use the optical output on the V3 to send the jb3 a signal (via optical s/pdif) and you'll use the rca ouput to send the M1 a signal (via coaxial s/pdif).  Both are always active.  Engage the ANSR function to dither the 24bit signal to 16 bit and set the recording freq at either 48k or 44.1.

The highest bit rate that you can acheive on DAT is 20-bit.  And that's only with the Sony SBM-1 accessory.

i thought that those units, even the modded ones, still dither down to 16 bit...

i also thought DAT is inherently 16 bit.

this is true, the a/d in the sbm1 is 20 bit and is dithered down
to 16bit with super bit mapping, hence the name sbm1

DAT isn't inherently 16 bit.

Tascam made/makes a 48k/24bit DAT machine it records at double speed.

Masterlink also made/makes a 24 bit CD recorder.

Both are home units, and not suited for our uses, but they do exist.

Alesis makes the Masterlink. It burns redbook CD's (16/44.1). You can record 24bit to the internal harddrive but you can't burn a "24 bit CD"...
