Summer Taping
« on: March 22, 2003, 10:28:01 AM »
I'm already thinking about taping this summer!  I'm looking for some advise and suggestions.

I currently am running AKG 393 -> AD1K (on the way!) -> d7

So far I'm very pleased with the 393s.  I have yet to run them outside though and am curious if some card or omni caps would be useful?

My big question is if Phish plays Limestone it seems as though if would be a tough show(s) to capture.  I'm considering either the omni caps or the ck98 (shotgun) caps.

Overall, for summer taping which cap do you think would be the most useful?

Thanks to all!!

Do you already have the cards with these mics?  I know that the 391s are usually sold as a set and then you can add the other caps later.

If the ck93 caps are the only ones you have, try running DIN outdoors with them and see if you like it or not.  I have been running DIN and XY with my hypers outside and I really like it a lot.  Sure, I wish that I had some cards and omnis to experiment with, but if $$$ is a consideration, try running with the hypers outdoors and see if you need anything else.  Those are pretty common mics so you may want to investigate if you can borrow somebody else's card caps for a couple of shows.

The ck98 shotgun caps are really expensive and pretty limited in their application.  Save the money on those for a mic upgrade or something.  I have never heard the omni caps with the Bluelines so I can't comment on those.  The cards sound really nice; if you already have a pair, use those outside.  If you don't have a pair, you may want to consider a pair of those before the shotguns or omnis.

you will get MUCH more use out of the cards!!!!
omni's are excellent mics for something like the gorge, red rocks, outdoor festival with lots of open air....however i am pretty confident you would be less than pleased with the results at most of the common venues you would be taping.

i'm kinda off topic now, but that's why i LOVE the schoeps mk5's....which are the omni/card caps.  this summer jason is going to be kind enough to let me borrow his mk5's and i am going to run some split omni's and critically spaced omni's with the tubes.

good luck,
dave

I am also curious about the Mk5. I have heard though thet the mk5 card setting or omni setting sounds a little different than the mk4 or mk2, not that I heard it was a bad difference, just a little different.

Sounds like I should pick up some card caps.  Any other input, especially on running split omni, is appreciated!  (most of the shows I'll be taping will be in you're average shed)

two things:
1) DON'T run the cards DIN outdoors!!!!!  run them nice and open (ie ORTF or NOS) depending on venue acoustics.
2) DON'T run omni's in your average shed.  run them in the types of places i mentioned in my previous post.  as for setup, i would first start with about 6-8ft spacing.  don't go too far or you will get a whole in the middle.  i would never space them more than 12ft.
have fun,
dave

Looks like you've gotten some pretty good info here. I will second that cards will be much more useful than omni's.

I have never realy cared much for shotguns, I have some tapes done with the 480's and the short shotgun cap... they're okay but in place of a shotgun I would just use a hyper for that extra "reach".

Outdoors in a Phish tapers section I would still probably be tempted to use hypers, unless the venue is totally open air.. ie. the gorge, red rocks or sandstone. If there is a roof I'd probably grab the hypers. Sometimes from the section you feel like you are a lot closer than you really are too, just something to keep in mind.

I can send you a Trey tape I made on summer tour 2001 from Riverport in St.Louis (big outdoor shed with a roof).. I ran 391->mv100->ad500e from the section.

Split omni's are great and 4-8 feet would be all that I would split them. I have some FOBs of Oswego with the u89s split 6feet if you're interested in hearing them. I would definitely look into the jecklin disc! I'm really interested in trying that myself sometime.

Good luck!

That could be interesting, that would be very useful for far field applications. I would worry about that hf boost if I was on stage though...

I can't wait till I can use my Nak300 with the CP-4 shotguns. Just picked them up from a friend here in Cleveland. If Limestone happens I'm in on the RV Brian!

Peace, Jesse
