Finally ran DPA 4060 LEGACY in the same application that I've been utilizing CA-14 omnis in for years - Healy on stage capturing a rock act for the purpose of a matrix. Band has a lot of dynamic range - hear-a-pindrop moments alongside uproarious romps. I love the sound of omnis & require the smallest footprint & quickest setup possible - this technique allows for an absolutely tiny amount of real estate, and I'm able to have my rig completely self contained and pre assembled, able to be pulled out and set up in a matter of seconds. Provides a sense of space within the room, emphasizes imaging between the sound sources, crowd excitement, and captures elements that may be lower in the mix e.g. drum kit in smaller room.
- The 4060s are wonderfully smooth. The CA-14 omnis are incredible mics for their weight class, but there is some harshness -- especially when it comes to sibilance, in my experience. I adore the sound of the 4060s in comparison. It is subtle, but it's a subtle improvement in every aspect of the capture, which adds up.
- Zero issues with distortion or clipping at the mic level. Set up on stage with a ton of kick drum & intense beats. Running these things with a 32 bit float device (in my case FR-AV2) is pure magic. No worries setting levels or overloading the gear, true set it and forget it. Your mileage may very, of course, just mentioning as this was my primary concern, and at least in my case it all shook out just fine for the levels I'm recording at.
So, yeah, I was considering snagging these for awhile and after running them wish I would've much much sooner. I also have KM-184s (cards), B9Audio hypers, and AKG C460b w/ CK22 omni caps and would often run SBD/FOB/healy-on-stage-CA-14 all at once -- when I'd do this I'd often find myself opting to go with the SBD/stage mix, with the FOB rig mostly just being a backup, due to either chattiness from the back or just the lack of excitement & loss of direct sound from the drum kit especially. Really wish I would've pulled the trigger on the 4060s years ago, now!
