Need marantz PMD661 firmware help!
« on: January 25, 2016, 10:40:35 AM »
Hi, I have an old marantz PMD661 (not mark 2) I need to update the firmware to the last firmware they did, currently running 1.17. It's Impossible to download it anywhere. Does anyone have it knocking around on their desktop or in an old folder they wouldn't mind popping it over to me?

Thanks.

Thanks but there is no download link. I've emailed them regardless. My best shot is someone on here who has it on their PC who would be kind enough to email it me.

I'm running stock firmware with my original 661...  which has an Oade Brother's modification.
Oade recommends NOT updating firmware on decks that they have mod'd.  And I've never felt the need to update.

Is there any significant reason to consider updating firmware??

Thanks!

Personally I'm still running v2.04 because they never documented the changes for v2.05 and didn't respond to my inquiry regarding the changes.  Can't speak for Oade decks but have seen Doug's post advising against firmware updates for Oade 661's.

PMD661 Firmware Details Version 2.04
Resolved issues below:
1. Fixed bug where the unit sometimes would not power on.
Previously fixed issues:
1. Expanded SD and SDHC card compatibility.
2. Fixed unit locking up when using pitch control on 24 bit 96 kHz files.
3. Resolved issue where setting EDL marks may corrupt the ‘Date Created’ in the file
properties.
4. Fixed formatting issue when the SD card is formatted in a different device.

I am resurrecting this thread since I am in exactly the situation as the original poster. I have an old PMD661 with v1.17 firmware, meaning it is incompatible with many current HCSD cards.  Except that now in January 2022 it appears that Marantz no longer has a firmware update link for the original (Mark I) PMD661. My understanding is the last firmware version was v2.05. Does anyone have the firmware update or know how I can access it?

Thanks.

^ Bump and thanks for the efforts above.

Picked up a mk2 for pretty cheap and it's on version a3.04. Should it be changed to the older version or can you? This isn't an Oade unit.

For digital in does the level control setting Manual vs Automatic Level Control (ALC) matter? I recall reading about the mk3 and the gain knob changing levels when using the digital input. Hoping that isn't an issue with this one.

I have both the MKII and the MK III as I picked up the MKIII a while ago dirt cheap. With the MKII, when using as a bit bucket, the gain is fixed like on most bit buckets. On the MKIII, for some reason it is adjustable. I almost feel like it was done in error, but who knows. As for the firmware, I see no reason to want to downgrade your firmware.

FWIW, (which is subjective) I like the MKII better than the MK III. That seems to be where they got it right. That said, the MKIII is still very nice. I have only used both Marantz decks as bit buckets, I have never modified either and have never used them with analog in. (Mics > USB MixPre 2 > Marantz II or III, or Mics > Mytek > USB Pre2 to Marantz II or III.)

Great, thanks for the feedback. All good to know. I purchased an Oade concert 661 mk1 when it first came out in 2009 and pulled some great recordings with it. Fast forward to today, I wanted a simple tried bit bucket.

Currently running a test V3 > 661 as I received some rechargeable AAs yesterday and the levels are like you mentioned. Looking forward to getting this rig in action.

edit- It appears the Key Lock / Hold switch does not apply to the Rec/Pause/Stop buttons. That's annoying.

There are 2 settings for the Lock button, all, or partial. The "All" setting will lock those buttons. It is #14 in the preset list. You can store 3 different setups and label them.
