Small XLR cables like Schoeps Lemo cables?
« on: June 26, 2022, 10:36:25 PM »
I just got a set of Schoeps CMC1-Lemo. The cables they ship with are amazing... the almost 20' long Lemo-to-XLR cable is *tiny!*

I do 'fly in' recordings a fair bit where every pound and inch of space counts, and this would be a game changer.

-Can I get 'regular' (non-Lemo) XLR cables in this diameter? I think it must be a 'regular' cable except for the Lemo end?
-Aside from the fact that they're probably fragile, are there any drawbacks compared to Mogami 2930 snakes or Canare Quad? Do they pick up interference? I thought this was the issue with little cables, but Schoeps doesn't seem to think so.

Naturally, I just invested in a bunch of big Mogami snakes last year that I haven't even used yet...

Smaller diameter cables are likely to have a less robust shield but any 2 conductor plus shield cable will work regardless of the size.

I made some out of Belden 1804 mini star quad. It's about the same diameter as Schoeps active cable.

You should check with Posthorn.. not sure what their situation is these days, but they used to carry Schoeps cable in bulk.. and most cable configurations.
The ‘older’ cable was Kevlar I think.  So it was strong and durable.. not super flexible, but good enough IMO.  Doesn’t get kinked or pretzeled in my opinion.
Not sure what cable the CMC1 uses.. but Posthorn might be a place to check out.

And I believe that CMC1 is built to block RF interference..
Also, the CCM Lemo cables are:  2 wires plus shield..  so CMC1 Lemo cables may be the same.

Actually, from this page, it looks like most of us would want Mogami w3031 (better insulation than w2697, but w2901 says it "compromises some sound quality" for durability, which sounds bad.

I think Belden 1804a mini star quad and the Sommer mini star quad cables look great (as well as Schoeps's own cable).
