ok, screw the "stealth deck".
I picked up one of those $15 cable adapters (female 3.5mm stereo > USB C ) ...., hooked up my tiny omni's to it, ran "field recorder" recorded band practice last night as a test.
flawless..., sounded great.   The app is kick ass.

Am I to understand that there is some tiny A/D chip in the cable?   Or is it just carrying the analog signal into the phone's A/D ?

Interesting option for super stealth jobs.

Having said that, portable recorders and battery packs are so small these days... I don't really see myself using my smartphone instead.

Taping is one of those things where I prefer a dedicated device. I've never had issues bringing a small one into a venue. I find USB-C connections a bit too flimsy, and phones do on occasion freeze up (I know, it's rare, but it happens).

I agree. Recorders are small and reliable.

Certainly not a cheap $15 option, but I use the Teenage Engineering TX-6 for six stereo inputs into phone. Have a dedicated iPhone just for that rig, clocked in 20+ shows in it so far. I should probably do a dedicated post on here for that rig.

Ah I'm primarily using it for multiple wireless receivers, but when I've used it for mics, I've just used my regular Church Ugly battery box or pre-amp (if I need more gain). I'll see if I can put something together.

Yes, but it'll only record the stereo matrix mixdown, not each individual input. Useless in my opinion.

I use two old very good omnis lavs (Beyer mce60) with the Sound Professionals adapter (SP-SAPM-1-USB-c) connected to to my HUAWEI Mate 20.
With all the settings allowed by the German FIELD RECORDER application,
I do stealth recording of good quality, good price and above all very limited weight.
