SpectraLayers 11

Is anyone regularly using this program?  I got the trial version and am trying to figure out if it is something I would use much.
Reviews I have found say it is great for separating vocals, which I would like to do to remove audience talk.  But I'm finding it very difficult to use, and the first time I tried these functions and saved it as a wave file, it came out with levels way higher than it went in, even though I didn't deliberately change the volume of anything - all I did was split into layers, erase out a bit of audience noise, then export.  It is now so high that it appears to be brickwalled, although I didn't hear any distortion when sampling.
