Title: Horizontal extender for stand?
Post by: MakersMarc on August 09, 2019, 09:00:39 PM
So at one venue I gaffer my 8’ stand to a pole so I can run 12’. Is there some kind of extender out there that can be screwed on a stand to extend out horizontally? it’s a pain in the ass to mount a mic bar because the stand needs to be flush to the pole.

Thanks!

Marc,

This is a bit indirect, as it is part of a whole kit of adaptors that I use. I use them as vertical extensions, and horizontal extensions, with manfrotto mini clamp, and larger super clamps; bear with....
I carry a series of all-thread rod sections, derived from 3/8-16 stock.  I carry a selection of extensions between 6" to 3' long (the sizes that are readily available at the hardware store).  I use an thread rod ferrule connector (a 4x long nut), and, wing nuts. The thread rod connector ferrule gives you a deep female thread set, and the wingnut is your jam/lock nut. I cover the all-thread rod in black heat shrink to conceal the threads
It requires that you have a 5/8-27_to_3/8-16 adaptor on your stand (I no longer run the larger thread pitch at all).

I'm looking for some pics; check back.

pics:
This is what I could quickly find; think creatively....
This is a combination of a longer section of thread rod, connected to a kick drum stand, and, on top of it, is a shorter section of thread rod stock to extend the stand for a second set of mics. All of the vertical sections are of this thread rod stock, connector ferrules and wing nuts.

rambling legend of image 6840:
> near the bottom is a red adaptor. that is the 58-27->3/8-16 adaptor.
> 2' thread rod with female ferrule connector and wingnut to attach and secure.
 > At J-Disc has a ferrule connector (silver) and wing nuts, and, a thread set to allow for another extension
> 6" thread rod extension with silver ferrule connector and wing nut, with t-bar at top (xy config)

image2979:
Again with the thread rod. This time, bent at 90º, to achieve perpendicular horizontal angle to the vertical stand.
There is also a silver 5/8->3/8-16 adaptor where the thread rod begins at the top of the "base" stand.
The main thread rod vertical element in this image is a 3' section.

Thanks Moke, gives me lots of options!

no prob.
The 3/8 ferrule connector also fits the spigot hole on superclamps, quite well; also the manfrotto miniclamp (my personal favorite).
It doesn't click and lock on the superclamp, like a real spigot. but, it is well held by the clamps locking screw.
It cleanly passes through the thru-hole on the mini-clamp, like it was made for it.

pics
Güde is rigged HRTF stereo, on a Manfrotto Mini, and a 4" thread rod extension in the thru-hole.
The CM3 pair is rigged on a 1' (6"?) thread rod extension, and, on a proper superclamp spigot.

realizing that the OP was for a horizontal extension,... I couldn't find good detailed pics of this kit in use. So, I took these pics just now.

7091 is how it goes to horizontal
7092 is the Manfrotto Miniclamp, and some of the extensions (1' or less)
The Miniclamp has a thru-hole thru the thick part of the clamp, that cleanly passes the extensions that do not have any heatshrink on the connecting ferrule threads. The heat shrink is a great fit, if you're not trying to pass it thru the clamp; otherwise you need to leave the h.shrink off of the widest parts..
The Miniclamp has two set screw holes. This makes it convenient to flip the clamp screw, depending on fitting needs and tightness of area.

You didn't mention how far out horizontally you need to go.

If you are looking for a traditional boom setup, I use this combo which is very solid.  You absolutely need a heavy counterweight on the bottom of you stand if you use this.

If you only need to go a short distance out, then I would say:

Should have specified...6 inches does the trick. Thanks! I have a super clamp so just need the arm. Thank you!

Realize there are two versions of that short extension. One has a hex base which limits the position you can rotate it. The other is a round base that allows any position. That said, I filed off the corners on my hex version and it rotates to any position I need.

I think morst has some good cheap solutions there, but they will need a little modding, and personally I wouldn't trust them with my mics unless they were clamped onto something square or rectangular.

Super Clamps are pretty inexpensive given the quality, and you can clamp tightly onto round stock with full confidence.

I agree with both of these statements!

I used the Irwin super clamp many times over several years with an aluminum home made extender to cantilever out from a square pole but I never felt 100% comfortable with it. I always worried that they would drop on someone's head. I did use some rubber from an inner tube glued onto them to get a better grip.

This is probably a good time to remind everyone to use steel safety cables made for lighting rigging whenever you are mounting something that could potentially fall and hit someone.

Anyone have this one? Having trouble seeing how it “plugs” into a Super Clamp

https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/546373-REG/Manfrotto_042_042_Extension_Arm_with.html

This one would be to screw onto my SC and get a little distance from rail grabbers.

Thanks!

hex nut on the end drops in to the receptacle and then you screw down like the adapters

you could also go

i own one of these and it works well with the superclamp and has a normal thread on one of the ends for other mounting.

I second this use of that specific articulated arm. I used it all over NOLA jazzfest with a superclamp for both a set of AKG naiant actives and an M10 just using internals. GREAT extender arm. Watch out and do not get the Manfrotto Double Articulated Arm with double tube support because it is super heavy (the 396AB-2).

Have a very minor issue with the house photographer at one local venue. I clamp to the front balcony rail for open stuff, which is the sweet spot even over the pocket. She's using slightly audible gear, and pays top dollar for an annual pass in th seats right next to the rail, best place o shoot photos and video. I bought the six inch arm that ought to be enough, along with switching from 4v to 41v.

Thanks all!
