Recording with earphones?
« on: October 02, 2005, 06:16:02 PM »
Hi,

am totally new to this. Maybe you can help. A friend told me there were earphones out there with very sensitive mics inside which are able to record what's going on around you (like you walk thru the woods and record birds, the wind thru the leaves and stuff like that... :) ). They are supposed to be pretty good and crystal clear as far as the sound quality is concerned.
have you ever heard of this (probably) and do you know where I can get them? If there are various models of various companies - which one is the best?

Hope, someone can answer this.
Thanks for you help!
Alex

Check out the binuaural (omni) mics from Soundprofessionals, I think that's what he's talking about.

I don't know what else is out there, as no one records with earphones in these parts.  ;)

It *is* possible to record from some of the headphones with larger diameter drivers, such as the Sony's that go around your neck. The quality isn't the greatest, but it saved my ass once when I left my mics at home by accident, and my Koss 55's saved the day.

I think I know what he's on about..these mics are used sometimes by European tapers. I don't rate them that highly for live stuff, but they might work for nature recordings:

Hope your German is up to scratch :)

Edited for stupidity: I see you are German..

Since I have found what I was looking for, i was wondering if anyone could recommend a good portable HDD recorder (or MD) I can use for these headmicrophones. I have searched ebay for all kinds of recorders but iT#s quite hard to say which one has a line-in for mics and can actually store the recording at high quality.

Can anyone help out again? :)

thanks,
Alex

Check out the Nomad Jukebox 3 (aka 'JB3' around here).  They show up used in the yard sale quite often, as well as ebay.  However, they are discontinued.  Standard 20gb hd, optical/analog in, li-ion batteries, shaped like a portable CD player.

It can't record, just checked it.
The Nomad Jukebox 3 is too heavy and too big for my taste. I would need a HDD recorder with less than 150g weight, and it's got to have a line-in.

But...so far... thanks for all the help! If you can recommend a HDD recorder, please, feel free and post it here.

Good luck finding one that small.  Sounds like hi-md is the way for you to go.  Check the "I have X dollars, what gear should I buy?" FAQ.

Just so you know, there was a long thread on the www.minidisc.org forums about an announcement by Sony on Friday that Hi-MD would no longer be produced. It wasn't a specific statement to that effect, but they're eliminating some non-profitable lines, and MD seems to be one of them..so I'm not sure how easy it would be to find discs in the future. If it's something you are interested in you'd better stock up on them while you can!
