Now my friend is on a short (very short) shotgun quest. The AT's he used in the nineties are ridiculously long and were battery operated. Looking at shots less than 10 inches with phantom power.
Shure VP82
Rode NTG1
AT 875R
Also, budget is a concern. The above 3 seem to be in his price range and are also quite short.
Thanks.

Shorter Beyer Guns...battery or Phantom power IIRC

The AT 875 has a ton of reviews and real cheap. Real short. No reviews or recordings with the Shure.

The AKG 568EB or B are both great short guns:

Just under 10" long. 20-20k response. They are sort of a hyper / shotgun hybrid.
Worth a look!

It looks like the AT 875R only has frequency response down to 90Hz. Great for speech or dialog on a video camera, maybe not as good for full range music.

The 568 was my first choice for him but hard to find a decent pair for a good price. Some beaters on eBay now.

I have a a few pairs of 568's. Always kept indoors/studio conditions. They came from a demolition of a corporate boardroom about 6 years ago where everything was slated to end up in an electronics disposal bin and I was able to intervene...
I could be convinced in to letting a pair go. No idea on what current market value is, but shoot me a price and I probably won't disagree...

FWIW, I bought a pair from Ted in December 2015 for $250. Should pop up if you search the Yard Sale. Great mics.

Maybe you mean the 416's? 418's are way out of budget.
